Sleep area at nursery

I'm currently developing our outdoor sleep area in the baby room. For our under 9 month olds I'm hoping to purchase some baby hammocks and for the 9 months to 2 years babies I want to purchase flat backed wooden prams, but I can't find them anywhere. Can anyone help? Does your child's nursery do this? And also what do mums think about outdoor sleeping?

My DCs nursery offers beds similar to these, but with long legs. Some parents are totally against them but I was much happier to have the DC sleeping outside than sharing a tiny room with up to 5 or 6 other babies.

There are blue=prints on line but I've no idea how much you'd have tto pay to have some made...

Thanks, they look really interesting. We have slept our babies outside for the past twenty years... I think our parents thought we were old fashioned, but they all say that they slept outdoors too. it's coming back in fashion now but I think it's the healthiest way to sleep. I wish I coild snooze in the fresh air!

I would not have been happy for one of my DC to sleep in a hammock. Definitely not.

The baby houses can be ordered from the Netherlands BTW, again, no idea of cost. There are several different variations on the general design, some of which would fit a 2yo...

Are there temperature constraints? (says she with a photo of herself asleep in a pram in the snow)

DrivenToDistraction · 15/06/2010 22:25

At our nursery (non-UK) we had to sign a permission form, they then applied common sense to when they did/didn't but the babies out. ie snow on the ground, yes, blizzard, no.

I have done my research and secure, purpose built baby hammocks, fully supervised for babies under nine months are the most appropriate option for a young babies physical development BUT I would and always will follow a parents lead. I would never go against a parent's wishes and would always follow their views.
Temperature wise we wouldn't go much below zero.. but many other high quality nurseries do. And we make sure our babies are totally cosy. We also wouldn't sleep our little ones outdoors if it was really foggy, damp conditions, but other than that we are outside. We have really healthy babies at our nursery

I must say i am [shocked] at the baby rabbit hutch things totally against the norm but I would have loved my babies to have slept outside

Whats wrong with a line of old silver cross prams? like in the 'peepo' picture book, that would have totally got me sold on a nursery!

i love this idea. my childminder sleeps the kids outside in the buggies from a practical point of view so she can easilky go out and about to nursery pick up etc. didn.t realise this would be seen as good practice in nurseries. Fab!!!!!

ashinyhappyperson · 15/06/2010 22:41

I love the silvercross prams too.. but the price makes me go eek... They would be on my wish list!

can't picture a 'flat backed wooden pram' but if you need wheels would evacuation cots do it?

would love more nurseries to do this

raindroprhyme · 15/06/2010 22:48

you can pick up second hand silver crossess on ebay for about £200, would be even lovieler to have a mix of styles, colours and vintages. my fav is british racing green.
That would def sell a nursery to me.

ashinyhappyperson · 15/06/2010 22:58

Thanks MrsBadger we already have one of those cots for fire evacuation purposes. I'm looking for sturdy, wooden prams for outdoors for our little ones.. I'm currently looking online in Denmark. It's so nice to hear that other mums think outdoor sleeping is best for babies. Thanks!
Raindroprhyme, what a fab idea. I will put this to my under 3's team. Cheers.

there are plenty of fanatics out their that refurbish coach built prams so they are baby ready too. So def worth looking into and costing.
