Baby swaddling from birth?

Found lovely website (justanotherbaby.co.uk)which sells Gro swaddles. Does anyone recommend swaddling from birth and if so for how long? Guidance would be appreciated - its all a bit of a mindfield!!

We swaddled our now 16 week old DD from birth and are still doing it now. I found the gro swaddles useless - they can get out of them in about 10 seconds. Only one that works for us is the mothercare miracle blanket as has little flaps that strap the arms down.

SIDs guidelines say it's fine to swaddle until 6 months - I think people have different experiences but it is still helping with sleep at our end.

We swaddled DS from birth. We have twice weaned him off his swaddle blanket and into a sleeping bag, and have had to start swaddling again because he can't sleep properly without it, even now at 5.5 months. I've heard of people swaddling until 12 months.

The No-Cry Nap Solution by Elizabeth Pantley says that swaddling is good but you should wean from it when your baby:

  • can wriggle free of the blanket
  • can roll over onto her side or stomach
  • fights against you when you swaddle her
  • no longer settles easily to sleep when swaddled.

I would swaddle for as long as it helps them sleep.

I would definitely recommend the Miracle blanket too. It is really hard to get out of. We have a Gro blanket too and it was rubbish - it was exceptional for DS not to have come out of it within minutes.

We swaddled for the first 12 weeks or so with a miracle blanket. I started to unwrap DS during the night as I didnt like feeding him like that and he didn't seem comfortable.

DS now sleeps in a sleeping bag (8 months) - it was a gentle transition from swaddle to bag.

DON"T buy the gro one!!! its useless my DD escapes after minutes as theres nothing to keep it snug in place. We use 'swaddle me' wrap that we bought off kiddicare.com- it has velcro to hold in place and even my houdini of a DD can't wriggle out, and it really helps her sleep longer and she is 8 weeks.

I can recommend this swaddle wrap and good advice on swaddling here.

I tried to wean mine off the swaddle as early as possible coz i was scared of sleep associations etc. but to be honest, if they sleep in it, you may as well keep it up as long as you can!

definitely recomend swaddling.. our lo's slept so much better swaddled. we did have some issues weaning off it, but used this pekemoe sleeper and loved that.. would use that next time too!

Swaddled from birth with all mine.
Just kept on swaddling until they didn't like it anymore (6-12m average). Some stopped sooner than others but one still liked to be wrapped in a sheet for bed for a long while.
Swaddled using a small moses basket sized sheet and then when that got too small, a cot sheet. Pulled nice and tight as I'd been shown how to do by the m/w with my first baby (23yo now).

I have swaddled all three of mine and will swaddle number 4 when she arrives in Nov.

DC3 was swaddled, by myself and the midwives, but when I got home a visiting midwife said that I should not swaddle When I looked into this, I found that the biggest concern with swaddling is overheating. For this reason, I swaddled DS3 with a large muslin square instead of a blanket. When he got too big for that I found a lovely muslin sheet which I used instead.

I swaddled similar to this way.
