2 yr old in early waking and late sleeping shocker

Please help! My 2 year old (next week) Now will not sleep until 8.30pm (I am putting him to bed at 7.45 but he pisses about for ages with me having to return to the room countless times). He then wakes anywhere between 5 and 5.30. He has an hour and a half daytime sleep. His room is dark and cool and his bed is comfy. I know it's probably a phase but it's been going on for a while now ( a few weeks). Should I cut his nap? I am exhausted as suffering from early preggo sickness and constant weeing so up in the night myself as well. Any ideas gratefully accepted! Also I do know lots of mummies who would think 8.30 to 5.30 a dream night but I don't think it's the norm for most 2 year olds.

What if you put him to sleep at 9-9.30? Just one hour, but beg differnce for you.

pinkgrapefruitjuice · 12/06/2010 15:11

Cut his nap to one hour, put him down earlier at night, try 7.00pm?

TrinityTrinityTrinity · 12/06/2010 15:12

my three year old doesn't do anywhere near that well at night

but maybe moving the bedtime would haelp

do you have black out blinds??

My little guy is just over two and we had to cut his daytime nap for exactly these reasons. I really miss the afternoon nap timeout but getting him to bed in the evening is painless now and he'll sleep until around seven most mornings.

sheeplikessleep · 12/06/2010 15:15

My 2.7 year old has started doing exactly the same.

Used to sleep 7-6.30/7 - a dream and a 2 hour daytime nap.

Now, he doesn't fall off until 8-9 and started waking 5ish.

I'm going to try dropping daytime nap ...

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 12/06/2010 15:17

Cut out the day time nap completely and put him to bed at 7pm. Ignore him once he has gone to bed, had story etc etc

babyphat · 12/06/2010 18:10

no solutions but mine is just the same - i feel your pain. but she was waking every hour or two for so long that this is quite nice by comparison! only started sleeping through at easter

Thanks everyone - seems like dropping the daytime nap seems to be the answer then. I do like afternoon nap time though but would probably prefer haviong more time in bed in which case I won't need it. He's still wide awake now and was up since 5.30.

I think we had to drop DS1's daytime nap around now... How is L when he wakes up from his nap? Is he grumpy or refreshed? When DS1 started getting grumpy it seemed like he was mixing up his night and nap sleeps and that was part of the problem...

sheeplikessleep · 12/06/2010 21:38

really interesting post abdnhiker, as our ds1 has, for last couple of months woken up really grumpy and in a very deep sleep from his nap, difficult to wake up (which I've been doing when he's been sleeping for 3 hours in daytime!).

Hey Amber, if you still want a rest in the day (I do!) can you put him to bed and leave the curtains open, give him a book and some toys to play with and see if he plays in his cot for an hour or so? I do that with the DTs and they'll play for about 90mins and then have a 30min nap.

When you say piss about what does he do? Is he crying or just messing about? If he is just messing I would just leave him - sometimes my two don't go to sleep till 9pm-ish even though I put them down at 7. I don't go back into them unless they are upset/crying, which is rare.

As long as they are happy and out of my way I don't mind what they do
