Do all 2 year olds wake up at 5.30am :-(

Mine wakes up at 5.30am and is raring to go in the morning. He normally goes to bed at 7.30pm and he used to have a daytime nap but I am trying to stop that but I dont think that makes a difference. Any ideas on how to keep him in bed longer? I dont want to put a stairgate on his door.

Obvious question, but do you have blackout blinds? Now it's much lighter early in the mornings it can make a big difference. Or you'll have to go for a later bedtime.

My ds will be 2 next month and yes wakes at 5.30am most days. Some days it can be 4.30 or 5am! I flatly refuse to get up until 6am. It means he either comes in our bed for a bit (which can be nice for 5mins and then he starts jumping all over us saying "get up mummy".

The other day he woke at 5am and just played with his toys in the hallway until I came to get him.

Today though he slept until 7am - utter bliss!!!

He too goes to bed at 7.30pm and has a black out blind so is pitch black in his room. He has only an hour nap in the day. Nothing really keeps him sleeping for longer.

Having had him only sleeping through the night for the past month (yes we had 23 months of sleep deprivation) I am just content that at least he sleeps through til 5am!

Sorry no advice, just that you have a child who likes to be awake like mine

no.

But DS1 used to when I put him to bed at 7/7.30.

Now DS2 goes to bed at 8.30/9 and gets up around 7-8am

Yes, if he goes to bed past 7.30pm. We are more likely to get post 6am wakings if we put him to bed 6.30/7pm

FlightyButPolite · 08/06/2010 09:24

If it makes you feel better my ds is nearly 5 and has been waking up at 5.15 for the last 3 weeks.

blackout blinds - tick
funny clock to tell him whether it's ok to get up? - tick
mummy going slowly mad from lack of sleep? - tick tick tick

Since the age of around 13 months dd has had a fixed schedule. She likes to wake up around 8.30am. 9am if you let her. Sounds great but she never, ever goes to bed before 9.30pm. I cannot for the life of me change this. If you get her up at 7am, she is still not tired until 9.30pm. I am quite worried about when school comes round next September.

So no, not all 2yr olds get up that early but the ones that sleep later sometimes don't go to bed at night.

DS (2.8) wakes up at around 5.40 most mornings (actually that's when I hear him emerging from his bedroom - no idea how long he's playing before that).

It makes no difference what time he goes to sleep or whether he has a nap during the day.

Finally he's sleeping through the night though so I'm grateful for small mercies! I've started to putting him back in his room if it's before 6, and he's is getting the idea that he has to stay in there to play.

DH gets up at 6.40 anyway to start getting ready for work so it's not too bad.

I agree SOH - DS2 is like this.

Even if he doesn't sleep during the day he is still not tired until at least 9pm.

It is tiring in its own way, especially when you have work to do in the evenings or want some peace and quiet.

We have to wake DS2 quite often to take him to the cm and DS1 to school.

ShowOfHands · 08/06/2010 09:54

DD stopped napping at 13 months. So she would be awake from 8.30am until 9.30pm. Any small nap, even 20 minutes and she'll be up until midnight. No adult television in an evening, no time alone with dh. Has its own peculiar set of problems. And generally having to wake her in a morning if we need to be somewhere makes her quite cross. And doesn't remotely affect what time she goes to bed.

jamaisjedors · 08/06/2010 10:27

Same here SOH.

Now that DS2 is 3.5, we can gain about 1/2 hour by putting a story tape on for him in our room once DS1 is asleep (they share a room).

We try to insist he stay in bed looking at books or listening to his tape so that at least we can have a little TV peace.

Some don't sleep at all, let alone wake up.

Some are the same when they are 3 too.

ShowOfHands · 08/06/2010 10:39

DD is 3 and has just this last month started sleeping through the night. It's a revelation.
