How much sleep should a 2 week old have?

Hi,

Hoping someone may be able to guide me with this question. DS is 16 days old, birth weight of 8lb then a drop of 14% by day 10. Since this point he's been formula fed every 3 hours, feeding well, putting on weight, pooping and weeing a plenty but very very sleepy. We often wake him for his feeds which he pretty much sleeps through and often goes straight back to sleep until the next one! He does have calm alert spells during the day but probably totalling 3 hours, the rest is sleep.

DH & I have different view points on this.

I think we could possibly be over feeding him and due to us waking him we're disturbing his sleep and making him more tired. He was weighed on Monday and had put on 10oz in 5 days so I totally believe he's thriving but perhaps we're exhauting him by constantly shoving a bottle in his mouth! I'd like to move to 4 hourly feeds (unless he's awake and ready to feed before) and see if this makes a difference.

DH is much more concerned and worried that the sleepyness is a sign that something is wrong. I want to reassure him but I don't really know for sure either?!

Can anyone offer some pearls of wisdom or had similar experiences?

Many many thanks!

I don't think it's a sign that anything is wrong. I would say at 2 weeks about 20 hours of sleep per day is within the normal range. My baby is 8 weeks old and sleeps about 16 - 18 hours out of every 24. At 2 weeks she was very sleepy nearly all the time. In the next couple of weeks you will no doubt notice him staying awake for a bit longer and being a bit more alert.

I agree. Enjoy all the sleeping while he's doing it! As long as he's feeding fine, gaining weight and producing plenty of wet and pooey nappies, then I don't think you should worry about it. Don't worry, he'll soon get to the point when he's waking YOU up for feeds rather than the other way round, I'm sure!

Thank you ladies. DS had more alert periods today so DH less anxious which all in all makes for a happier household all round
