Is it bad to nap in carseat in house?

My DD is classic sleep fighter and usually only way to get her to nap in day is to tramp streets for hours with pram, trouble is I need to work from home (or want to sleep when she is asleep!) but I have recently discovered if I strap her into her carseat and rock her she will fall asleep in 10mins (considering I have spent three hours trying to get her to nap before now this is a miracle!). But how bad is it to put her in her carseat for her morning nap? (her afternoon nap I put her in her hammock or take her out in pram). A night she sleeps in her bedside cot but sometimes if she won't settle after a feed she goes in carseat or bouncer to get back to sleep. She's 14 weeks.

I think its fine for her to nap in her car seat, if you were on a long journey in the car and she fell asleep you wouldnt think anything of it...

JackBauer · 21/05/2010 09:14

actually I would disagree. Babies shouldn't sleep for any longer than necessary in acar seat as it can restrict their breathing (because they are lying 'curled up').
article here about it.

Do you have roonm in your house for a pram/lie flat buggy? Mine both slept downstairs in my sisters old pram that was a nightmare to steer so it very rarely left the house but I used to be able to wheel them around in it and rock them to sleep, very handy. Plus if I wanted to pop to the shops for chocolate I could!

It's fine! Also you are doing yourself a favour by letting her sleep in a variety of places. You must have read the horror stories on here of babies not being able to sleep unless in own bed, own room, own house etc.

How long is her morning nap?
If its not too long she will be fine, like mumoffour says if you were in the car then you wouldn't even think about it.

My DD frequently used to fall asleep in the car, I would carry her into the house in her car seat and leave her until she woke up. Can't see it being a problem. If I woke her by lifting her out she would be very grumpy!

My DD had severe breathing issues when born and we found that sleeping in car seat (ie almost upright) was the best position for her.

mumoffourgirls · 21/05/2010 09:30

really its up to you what you do, every child is different and you its whatever works best for you..

JackBauer · 21/05/2010 09:53

All I can say is to reiterate what I said above, babies should not sleep in car seats for more than a max of 2 hours at a time, whether you are driving or not. In the car regular breaks should be taken.
If you google 'babies sleeping in car seats' there are a lot of links you can read to make your decision but I wouldn't do it.

Thandeka · 21/05/2010 10:36

Well from yesterday I decided her morning nap shouldn't be longer than 2 hours as it messes with her sleep later- the day before she did sleep for 4 hours in it after a bad night- oops.

Will look at those links thanks JackBauer, when she does sleep in carseat I either put her in sidecot so I am napping next to her and can check on her or she would be by my feet at my desk again same so I could check on her. I guess it's a case of weighing up the risks versus the need for sleep since she is such a sleep fighting monster but I defo won't let her go for longer than two hours in it (am driving for 4 hours next week and was debating just leaving her if asleep but will stop for a nappy and feed break now.

Oh yeah and sadly no room in flat for pram to be left set up- 1st floor flat- pram has tone taken apart and put together everytime we use it -is a nightmare! By time we move she will be out of pram prob.

could you rock her to sleep in the carseat then move her to the cot?

EarthMotherImNot · 21/05/2010 10:46

If it's the rocking that settles her what about a bouncy chair?

I use ours to gently rock lo's to sleep by sitting it facing me then put my feet on the bars at the bottom and gently rock til they drop off. The vibrating ones are good too.

I don't think it matters too much what you do. Only thing is, you won't be able to do it forever, and then what will you do?

Dare I say it on mumsnet... it might be worth teaching her to self settle now as it'll be easier now than it will be when she's older...
