Help! 16mo keeps getting legs wedged between cot bars - we nearly had to break them the other day... :-(

Can anyone advise me what to do - cot bumpers seem useless, and I've heard of Airwrap, but not sure its 'sturdy' enough.

It's happened twice now, he gets wedged up to his thigh, very upset and very bruised legs and we struggle to get him out. The first time we were both home so DH yanked open the bars while I gently pushed him through (while he screamed and we thought he'd broken his leg). Just now it happened, DH is at work and I struggled to get him out - it was really scary.

Can anyone help?

Is it an old cot? Older ones had wider gaps between the bars. If that's the case you could get a new one.
Other than that, what about using sleeping bags so his legs aren't free?

The cot is 16 months old - bought for him when he was born (that's not old, is it?) - and he was in a sleeping bag...

I've ordered an Airwrap - figured for £18 its worth a shot.

Thanks for answering though Buzz

When my DS was doing this I folded a cellular blanket longways and weaved it in and out of the bars.

newmomma · 18/05/2010 14:55

Oh that's a good idea...

Only thing is he's a nosy bugger and would spend hours fiddling with it rather than going to sleep - but I guess its better than him getting wedged.

I'll try it tonight, thanks.

DS went through a very brief phase of doing this. We extricated him about 3 times, and used lube each time .

It was easier to get that than run downstairs to get olive oil, but it absolutely did the trick when DS was wedged like yours right up to his thigh.

newmomma · 18/05/2010 15:52

I wouldn't be able to get to the thigh as he was wedged in his sleeping bag - even if I did have lube to hand...

how the hell did he do that in a sleeping bag?

newmomma · 18/05/2010 15:58

Not sure - he's done it twice now and I got in such a flap I didn't really notice.

One leg sort of tucked up inside the sleeping bag and the other wedged out straight through the bars.

I have just had to move 18mo ds into a bed because of this reason.

newmomma · 19/05/2010 08:59

I had thought of this - but he is SUCH a wriggler there is no way he'd ever stay put. I'm not worried about him getting in/out of bed - its the sleep acrobatics that would worry me.

I'd be picking him up off the floor about ten times a night.

You could get a bed guard to stop him from falling out though, if you did move him to a bed. I moved my ds at 16 months too. Week or so of hell as he wouldn't stay put, but since then he's been fine and doesn't even get up himself in the mornings!

newmomma · 19/05/2010 09:13

Hmmm... Perhaps we should consider a bed then.

DD due two days ago(!) so could use the cot-bed being free in the near future...

I am currently using a bed guard with ds.

DD was13months when she went into a bed and she never had a bed guard, just a kingsized duvet folded over a few times at the side of the bed.

BertieBotts · 20/05/2010 00:12

You could go for a mattress on the floor, then he wouldn't hurt himself if he did roll out.

newmomma · 20/05/2010 09:18

ooh - mattress on the floor - fantastic idea!

just have to try and convince dh its not too early to put our 'little baby' in a proper bed.

Is he trying to climb on something? My DS (18mths) did this a couple of times - although thankfully only up to his ankle, but he then turned his leg so he couldn't get it out again... he is also in a grobag.

I realised some card had fallen down behind his cot and he must have been... (guessing here) either trying to poke it with his foot or climb on it?!? Whatever he was doing I moved it and he hasn't done it since.

JennyPenny23 · 22/05/2010 22:04

My 13month DD2 does the same - but what we do is have a bedguard in the cotbed. Works fine.

DD1 went into a bed at 11 months old because she could climb out of her cot . She was fine and never got out of her bed. COtbeds arn't very high anyway and if you put a douvet or something next to the bed, I doubt he would hurt himself
