4.5 month old waking up shortly after bedtime

DS is 18 weeks. For the last week or two, he has started to wake up about 45 minutes after going to sleep at bedtime. This suggests to me that he thinks he's having a nap rather than a night's sleep, since 45 mins is a nap sleep cycle (I think night time cycles are longer IIRC).

We have a bedtime routine which hasn't changed in the last month. Bedtime is always between 6 and 7pm, although the exact time depends on when his last nap finished, so that he's not too overtired at bedtime, (or we have a fight on our hands).

The room is much darker at night than for naps. At night he sleeps on a mattress next to mine, but for naps he sleeps in a carry cot. For naps, I rock or feed him to drowsiness in a chair, but at bedtime I feed him in bed. So he should be able to tell the difference.

Has anyone else's DC done this? Did they just stop? Is there anything I can try to help him stay asleep once he goes down for the night?

He did use to sleep for a good long stretch at the beginning of the night - in fact, his best was 10-11 hours without waking . But now he struggles to sleep for more than 3 or 4 hours after bedtime before waking. I'm wondering whether there might be a connection, perhaps? He can't self-settle yet.

Oops, I meant he usually wakes again 3 or 4 hours after bedtime, having already woken 45 mins after bedtime.

Hello AngelDog.
I'm afraid i don't have any advice but hope you get a more helpful answer as my 16 wk old DD also does this.
Your DC sounds just like mine - she will feed to sleep quite quickly at bedtime but then wake up 20 to 40 minutes later without fail. It then takes a good hour to get her back off. It's like she needs a pre-sleep-sleep!
She has also lost the ability to sleep for more than 5 hours at a stretch, having previously done 8 most nights.
Ahh she has just woken up now!

Hmm, puzzling, artattackandvine. After that waking, DS will go straight off again if I feed him again, and will sometimes go off again if I give him a finger to suck for a couple of minutes. Tonight he went off again just with me stroking his forehead (unusual) and once he cried for a minute and then managed to settle himself back off. That is more like his night-time waking habits.

It does sound like your DD thinks she's having a proper nap, then wants awake time before bedtime 'proper'.

Now it occurs to me whether the more frequent waking might be related to the 4 month sleep regression? (here and here for more info.)

My DS did exactly this around the same age. We solved it by making sure he woke from his last nap around two hours before bedtime. Also put him to bed earlier. After a while he went from waking after 45 mins and taking 90 mins to settle to waking after 45 and resettling very quickly then sleeping through.

Try and make sure they don't stay awake for too long in the day - for my DS, he lasted 60 mins before showing signs of tiredness so I'd get him to nap. It didn't always work!

Sleep goes out the window at 4 months for many babies - the world is far too exciting!! But it does get better.

Hah - he knew I was posting about it as he didn't do it last night! They do like to keep us on our toes, eh?

Thanks, Iggly. We do try to stick to limited awake time in the day, but the interval between the last nap and bedtime can be very hit-and-miss!

Angel typical eh?! Yes I always struggled with the last nap. Now my DS is fighting it so I think he wants to drop it but I'm not sure he's ready - so another challenge there!
