Toddler escaping from sleeping bag

18 month old DS has recently figured out how to undo his grobag and repeatedly gets himself out of it then wakes himself up (I assume as he gets cold).

I was just about to buy the next size up grobag for summer but not sure whether to bother now if he won't stay in them. Anyone have any suggestions? Should I swap to blankets or just hope this is a phase?

Thanks

My DS did this and we stopped it using two ways. Sewing a small fishing clip on the bottom near the zip so that we shut the zip and then did up the clip at the bottom. It took him a few months to work out how to open the clip !! Now we put him in the bags on backwards and so far he hasn't worked out how to get out.

Is there a hole in the end of the zip? Safety pin it to the bag once closed?

I asked this last year and someone suggested putting them on inside out - it's a faff but it worked! DS stayed in it till nearly 2 in the end.

Seconding putting it on back to front.

We had one old fashioned metal safety pin that did sterling service keeping ds2 in his grobag for some time. Plastic ones are too bendy and he could bend them til they gave. Eventually he wrenched whole zip (pulling bit) and safety pin off in one go and then we had to open/close the bag using the tag that the pulling bit attaches to - 2 year old not dextrous enough to manage that!

Never managed putting him in bag backwards for some reason but sounds like top tip!

Does your sleeping bag have a zip with 2 zip-pulls? (The Gro-Bag travel sleeping bags, which we use, have a 2-way zip).

If so, buy some plastic cable-ties from a DIY / hardware shop (about a quid for 80) and fasten the 2 zip-pulls together with a cable-tie. This has stopped DS escaping from his sleeping bag each night.
You'll have to snip the cable-tie each morning when you want to get your DS out of the sleeping bag - it's a doddle with nail clippers.

A friend's DD manages to escape from her gro-bag even with it on inside out. If none of the above work, I would suggest a cot duvet as an alternative. We abandoned the gro-bags with DD when she was about 16 months old as she kept getting it twisted around her and waking up. The quilt was great - she even managed to pull it back over herself if it came off. I did tend to dress her a little warmer than I would have done in a gro-bag though to compensate.

Some brilliantly simple suggestions - thank you! I'm going to start with putting it on backwards and work through all your ideas until I find something that keeps the little blighter darling in. Thanks again.
