When should DS be able to settle himself to sleep?

My DS is 6 weeks old and has just started sleeping in his cot in his own room (cot won't fit in our room and he's too big for the moses basket). He sleeps ok through the night - usually wakesonce and thenearly morning. However, he won't settle himself - he falls asleep in my arms and then i put him in the cot. I just wonder if this is setting up for trouble in the future? At what age should he be able to settle himself to sleep? And should i be trying to do something else now to get him in a better pattern?

Thanks for any help or advice.

"Rod for your own back" is the biggest myth about babies. Whatever you do with a baby of under 6 months, and even for the first year, they won't remember subsequently. If you let the baby lead you and just see to his needs, he will feel secure enough later on to let go of the apron strings so to speak. If you deny the baby his needs, that's the way to make trouble.

Don't even go there until 12 weeks. Then if his weight is good then he should be able to do at least 11 to 6 or 7 am.
They say it takes 3 days to make or break a habit - so whatever you do, be consistent.
A simple sleep routine with same music or words from mum everynight over time lets them know its time to sleep.

Good luck
