DS was kicking up the biggest fuss at bedtime - it was like he just wasn't comfortable - he kept fidgeting as if trying to get comfortable. Anyway, he kept falling asleep and then waking up really crying after 5/10 minutes and i had no idea what the problem was. he was getting really upset.

anyway, really spontaneously and not really thinking, i turned him onto his front and he made some happy noises and was asleep in a second . he is still happily asleep now it looks like - i heard some little noises on the monitor and he has turned his head the other way but is still asleep.

is this ok? he is a strong boy, sits up completely unaided, turns from back to front hundreds of times a day (he used to fall asleep on his front on his mat during the day sometimes when he was tiny and i would stay with him but he hasn't done that for ages) but i've only seen him go front to back once. i have no doubt he has the strength, he just can't seem to remember to do it. he can lift his head up completely when on his front and can do mini push up things easily too...

i am wondering how well he will sleep as he looks mega comfy and has always seemed a bit annoyed on his back - often waking in the night...

any ideas? is this ok, is the main thing i am asking i supppose???

I believe once they can roll over, you are fine to leave them sleeping on their front. You can't stop them anyway! The official advice is to put them to sleep on their back, and if they roll over to their front, you can leave them.

DS1 slept on his back quite happily till he could roll and his favourite position now is face completely in pillow, bum in the air! DS2 was put on his front from 8 weeks old (he had reflux and couldn't get comfy otherwise). The risk from cot death falls dramatically from 6 months onwards, so I would say you are okay!

Once mine could roll over independently they could sleep any way they wish.

I have one that sleeps with bum in air - it's very funny!

We have gone in and found DD on her back with her legs vertically in the air before too!

Both mine prefer to sleep on their front and have done from about 5/6 months. I have a bum in the air one aswell.
