6 month crying in sleep

After a blissfull week of sleeping through our almost 6 month old DS has started to cry during the night, however sometimes he appears to still be asleep. The last two nights this has started 50 mins after he is put down at 7pm. Picking him up at this time seems to help - but he will still cry for a while in our arms and then once settled I have put him down. Last night he also started crying approx every 45 mins - 1hr after this until being fed about 1.30 when he was properly awake, he then slept through till 7am. Some of the crying before this point was only brief and he went back to sleep again himself. When I say crying - I also mean proper crying rather than grizzling.

I just really want reassurance that he is ok and that I should not be worried that he is crying but appears to be asleep. Any advice gratefully received.

My DD2 used to do this. It's weird isn't it. She'd cry, but when I went in appeared to be asleep. Sometimes i'd pat her a bit or sometimes I'd check her but leave her alone. I never knew why it started, but it didn't last that long and I'd pretty much forgotten about it until I read your post. I'm not sure what to say - I was confounded at the time, but it soon passed and she was fine. I'd try not to disturb him too much - you don't want to start waking him or bringing him out of the semi sleep state he is in unnecessarily.

My LO does this when there's a tooth about to break through - I think it hurts but he doesn't always wake up fully. A half dose of calpol at bedtime tends to sort it out.

Mine does it too because of teeth - i agree it's weird. Give calpol - try it in milk in a bottle in their sleep if it's time for another dose.
