Trying Controlled Crying with 20 month old.

Been reading all the posts on CC and ready to take the plunge. Sleep deprivation led me to nearly reverse car into a dustbin lorry today so desperate times and all that...

DD is 20 months and the bit I'm not sure about is that when she starts the crying bit she stands up in her cot and has been known to fall asleep briefly like this.

So should I leave her where she is when I do the checks? I'm a worried she will bash her face or something if she eventually falls asleep like this.

Please help!

Hi
We did CC with our first child dd when she was 14 months old, it took 3 nights and was (i'll be honest) hell. She could stand up too, we just laid her back down, every time we went in(we did 2,5,10 and 20 mins intervals)she cried for 2 hours on the first night 45 mins the second and went straight to sleep on the third night
We now have a happy, little girl (3) who goes to bed at 730, settles herself to sleep and sleeps through till 830 most nights.

I've just got to get her wee brother to sleep through now!
Good luck

Hi Katiepotatie - ace name!

Thanks for the honesty..have a feeling it will be a tough night so bracing myself with a glass of the red stuff (not sure if that is wise but feel I have earned it!).

I will keep putting her down I think. I know she is able to get down herself as before her nights went wrong she would often stand up and have a tour around the cot talking to teddies. I was just concerned that if durng CC exhaustion finally gets the better of her she may just drop off and then when her body relaxes break her nose on the way down or something.

Oooh..the bliss of them sleeping till 8.3o! Sounds like you deserved it.

Thanks again!

I don't have any experience of CC - just being nosey. But I had read that when they're standing up in the cot, you teach them how to sit down by helping them bend their knees and guiding them down. No idea if it works though!

Good luck!

Thanks! [grinj

I hope all goes well tonight, Just thought i would add that our ds 12 months has just started standing up in his cot too, he's been settling himself for a while now, but manages no probs to get back down to fall asleep. Tonight will be tough, but remember it will be all worth it, you will both be like new people with some decent sleep

canichangemymind - How did it go?

canichangemymind · 03/05/2010 08:03

Hi Katiepotatie

sorry I didnt reply on Saturday...Saturday evening was actually much better than back to normal last night

When we did go in to her we picked her up to put her back down but she does seem to be dropping off whilst standing up so that seems to be stopping her from settling.

Guess it will just be the battle of the wills for the next few nights!

When I got undressed for a shower last night realised I had been wearing my knickers on inside out and back to front all day...!

Sleep deprivation is a killer, I went to work once with my trousers on back to front!

I hope things get better for you, she'll soon get the message that it's bed time

canichangemymind · 10/05/2010 21:53

Hi katiepotatie

just wanted to let you know that we have been sticking with the CC thing and everynight for the past 4 things have been getting gradually better!

So thanks for your advice!

Hi, I'm thinking of trying it with my 10 mnth DD, please let me know how it goes

canichangemymind · 13/05/2010 14:11

Hi wrensmum

Well DD now goes from 7 till anytime between 3am and 6am waking once. If she wakes after 5am she will go back off once put down but wakes again about a half hour later. So the current strategy is to tough it out to see if the early waking corrects itself..we shall see how it goes.

Have to say although CC SEEMS to have worked (coz who knows, it may have corrected itself eventually without us intervening but I felt better actively doing somwthing!) it was tough and goes against every instinct I have as a mum however all three of us are much happier getting a (almost!) full nights sleep again!

Hope it works for you too - keep us posted!
