3 week old not happy in basket

Hi,

For the past couple of days/nights, my 3 week old will fall asleep after a feed and then start to scream once in moses basket. She will sleep anywhere but as soon as she is in her basket she screams. Any advise? She is feeding alot today - every 30 mins for a few minutes. Previously she had been feeding every 3-4 hours for up to an hour at a time but over the past week she is only feeding for 5-10 minutes at a time. Is this normal? Surely she cant be getting enough milk in this time. Apart from today, she has still been feeding every 2-3 hours for only 5-10 minutes.

Very normal to have a growth spurt at 3 weeks iirc, so the cluster feeding is v normal. If I were you, I'd get a wrap sling so she can sleep straight after a feed and you needn't wake her by puttign her down. Or, put a muslin by her face as she's feeding and lay her on it in her basket the sheet might be sold. My ds hated being laid down after a feed, turned out I wasn't winding him enough

She might just hate the basket, both my kids did. I moved my dd into her pram, it had like a carry cot top and she slept in that. I did the same with ds, I think they felt more cocooned.

She has slept fine in it up until now. Se has now been awake since 8am and is really over tired. HAve read on some web sites that breast feding mums should avoid letting their babies "snack" and that long feeds should be encouraged. How on earth can I do this if she is screaming? My understanding was that demand feeding was just that - you feed whenever your baby demands it. That is what I have been doing.

just bumping for you.

i did exactly the same as Amapoleon said and it worked. it cost me £200 for the pram/carrycot but it was worth every penny for a bit of sleep

Oh gosh, don't worry about the snacking thing - just let her demand feed as you have been, and let her get into her own pattern. If you are happy with the way things are, don't change them just because of what some website or book or relative tells you you "should" be doing. She's your baby - there is no wrong way to do it as long as you are feeding her

don't worry about snacking - people who refer to snacking don't seem to really understand how breastfeeding works

the more your DD feeds the better - short or long spurts are fine (as long as you are getting plenty of wet and dirty nappies)

My DD would feed as you describe - sometimes very quick and sometimes longer. She was a very efficient feeder and even by a few weeks old was feeding in around 20 mins max

my DD loved being swaddled, being held (she napped on my knee a lot) and we co-slept too (naps and night time at this age)

at this age if you think your baby wants/needs a feed then offer the breast - you could also feed her to sleep which may help her get used to the basket?
