6mo moving about in cot and ending up sideways, anyone else found this?

DS has just learnt to throw his legs up and wriggle himself around in the cot, with the result that often when we get him up in the morning he is sideways, with his head wedged against the bars and his feet poking out the other side (in a Grobag so feet not stuck)

It hasn't really been a problem up 'til now (not waking at night) BUT he's starting to take ages to settle as he kicks himself around to this position now BEFORE going to sleep, then babbles about it for ages

I know that learning motor skills can disrupt things - will this get better on its own? Anyone else's lo done this?

I think they all do it. It's what cot bumpers are for.

let him get on with it, it's not hurting him.

Thanks Col - I mean Pronoia...

I think he's enjoying the new perspective

I wouldn't worry. My DS2 loved to be wedged in his cot. In fact he loved to be wedged so much that when we dropped the cot side (due to vaulting) he decided to sleep in his brother's bed so he could wedge himself up against somebody else!

He's four now and I often find him sideways or upside down in the bed. I just plonk any dangling limbs back in the bed and make sure he's warm enough.

It's quite normal - even if it's frustrating to have to keep going in to rescue them when their legs get stuck between the bars!
All 3 of mine did this and DH and I got used to hearing bumps and bangs during the night as our babies shuffled about
fwiw once they have been in a bed for a while they seem to adjust to the "normal" way of sleeping...although DS3 can still sometimes be found lying with his head at the foot of the bed and feet on the pillow

Mine did this from quite early on, he's 18 months now and still does it.

Yes my nearly 7 month old rolls over and turns 180 degrees n his cot, so ends up all over. Short of safety pinning his grobag to the sheet there's not much to be done . I wouldn't advise using cot bumpers, they can be risky once they are moving about - never much seen the point of them myself.

I do have a cot bumper - dh bought it when sent to the shop on a mission and I didn't have the heart to tell him they were frowned upon - esp as the advice is currently that they are neither good nor bad, just pointless.

Am thinking of removing it now, actually, as ds is so mobile in the cot, not sure if he could get wedged under it. Probably safer to let him whack his head than risk this..

My DS has just started doing this too (2wks off 6mths), however as we have a bedside cot, I end up with his legs thrown over me, getting kicked in the arm/belly/face (depending where he wriggles to and where I end up after bfing!)

Actually he usually ends up on our mattress entirely as I very often give up putting him back on 'his bit'. In face was thinking about poss moving cot away from the bed at some point soom as an experiment to see if he'll actually sleep better and was wondering about bumpers.

He often gets frustrated with the grobags as they get all twisted, but without sleeping in one his legs will go through the sides. what to do?

mistressploppy · 23/04/2010 22:22

I wonder if you could sew a sausage of foam into the bottom of a grobag to stop them getting rucked up...

Oooo - I think I'll try that. Tho I'll use a tightly rolled up & tied baby blanket.
Cheers for the idea mistressploppy !

I have got the 'Airwrap' cot bumpers which are made of mesh fabric and velcro onto the cot bars. They also push right down so they can't be used to climb out of the cot.

My 7mo DS also enjoys sideways sleeping and the Airwraps mean he doesn't have a big indentation in his head from the cot bars..

I just got the 2 sided ones as he more often had arms/legs out the sides than the ends of the cot. He likes to stroke them too. .

My son is now 15 months and I still hear bumps and bangs during the night against cot sides. I still find him in bizarre positions as well but asleep and happy.

He does have a gro bag, it took him a few nights to get used it snugglejunkie in the early days but he loves it now. He's actually outgrowing his current one and needs to go up a size again

frasersmummy · 27/04/2010 21:23

my ds is 5 now but I remember clearly him working his way round the cot..

he seemed to go from corner to corner, sometimes sideways, sometimes upside down sometimes diagonal etc

we used to wonder how he wasnt exhaustd in the morning after "doing laps of his cot" all night
