For those of you lucky enough to have a one year old (ish) that 'sleeps through' could you tell me how much daytime sleep they have please? I'm experimenting..

My one year old is up and down all night and the only way I can seem to prevent this is to totally starve her of sleep in the day!

I am brainwashed into thinking she must have about 3 hours in the day so I need to hear others' experiences in order to open my mind

Thanks girls

When dd was one she had about an hour in the morning (90 mins after waking up) and then about 90 mins - 2 hours in the afternoon (woke her up no later than 4.00pm). She slept from 7pm - 8am.

santander · 21/04/2010 11:24

But thats SIXTEEN HOURS SLEEP

I swear when DD3 was this age (she's 2.9 now) the more sleep she had in the day, the better she slept at night. IIRC Both dd1 and 2 were the same.

DrSpechemin · 21/04/2010 11:27

I know - sorry

She was v active from a v young age and was never the type of baby to just sit happily and watch the world go by. She really did need that much sleep - I used to have to wake her up from every nap.

If its any consolation she wakes at about 6am now...

aquavit · 21/04/2010 11:28

indeed

DD (nearly 1) sleeps through and has done for ages (yay!) BUT is very resistant to daytime sleep. She gets about 11 hours at night and often only naps for 45 mins - once - in the day. On the days when she gets more than an hour and half of daytime naps, she doesn't sleep well overnight.

Nursery tell us that this isn't all that common though (think this was especially the case when she was younger - she's been like this since about 6 months).

WorzselMummage · 21/04/2010 11:32

The more sleep they have the more they need is my experience. My DD always slept loads ( like 18 hours a day loads) but my Ds barely slept atall for the first year and started sleeping though about 13 months and now he'll sleep for 2 hours in the morning and 12 or 13 at night.. if he doesn't get his daytime nap he's a pain in the arse, he needs real routine.

dycey · 21/04/2010 12:43

Well mine only started sleeping through at 12 months once walking loads in the day and had dropped to ONE nap of 1.5 hours max. He goes to bed at 8pm and wakes before 6am - so isn't getting much sleep at all over 24 hours. But at least he sleeps at night.

maybe eleven hours asleep out of 24. But always cheerful and good company, so can't matter can it?

Different story that hope helpful.

bippyhippy · 21/04/2010 13:09

My youngest is 14 months and sleeps like this:

6:30 Wake
9:30 Nap
11:00 Wake
14:00 Nap
15:00 Wake
19:00 Bed

He usually sleeps through.

They're all different!

jelliebelly · 21/04/2010 13:20

My dd is 15mths and she sleeps through from 7pm to 7am with 2 daytime naps - about 1.5hrs in the morning and 1.5hrs in the afternoon. If she is anywhere other than at home though she may drop either or both daytime naps so is v. tired grumpy come teatime so may put her to bed earlier.

daisyj · 21/04/2010 13:29

DD is nearly 13months, has slept through (7.00ish - 6.30ish) since six months. Daytime sleep has always been variable. Often at nursery (two days a week) she will sleep less than an hour after lunch, and has refused a morning nap there since 9 months. At home, she sometimes refuses a morning nap, but can sleep up to 1.5 hours from 9.30ish and usually sleeps 1.5 hours from 1.00ish.

At grandparents' (one day a week) usually takes morning nap 1-1.5 hours, after lunch 1.5hours +.

So, as you can see, we have to be a bit flexible, and pretty much take our cues from her.

Maybe your dd just doesn't need much sleep in the daytime... I wouldn't say they all need 3 hours, certainly. And in our case sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn't (sorry, that's not much help, I know!).

KiddingAnxiously · 21/04/2010 13:49

DD 13 months sleeps from 8pm to 7.30am and usually naps for an hour around 10/11am.

The only thing that changes her routine is teething really.

nadssss · 21/04/2010 14:09

My 14 month old gets up around 530/6am (misery) and has a 30 min nap at 9 and an hour and a half (on a good day) at 1.15ish. She then goes down just after 7.

I do wake her up from her am nap as a short nap in the morning usually leads to a longer one after lunch.

Am so so jealous of the babies that sleep 12 hours at night AND nap!

Rhian82 · 21/04/2010 14:16

DS sleeps for about 11 hours at night (7.30pm-6.30am ish).

He generally naps for around 1.5 hours in the day, but sometimes this is as little as 45 minutes, or as much as 2-2.5 hours. This is all in one go - he never has more than one nap a day no matter what time it is or how long it is.

He's 18 months.

Rubena · 23/04/2010 07:42

Sorry ds older now but stumbled on here looking for transiton from cot to bed threads!
When ds was 1 he slept about 1-1.5 hrs nap in the morn around 10am then about 40min-1hr in the afternoon around 2pm and from 7pm-7am at night. He's 16 months now and some days has 2 naps still but if I'm out he won't nap and will just have about an hour or 1.5 in the morning then is so so so tired and if he makes it until 7pm he will sometimes sleep till 730-8am depending on how much action he's had during the day

Aubergines · 23/04/2010 08:06

When DD1 was 12 months she slept about 11 hours at night (7-6) and an hour at lunchtime.

When DD2 was 12 months she slept 13 hours at night (7-8) and at least 2 hours at lunchtime. She still has the same routine at 16 months.

Experiencing the two of them convinced me that they are all different and need different amounts of sleep.

liamsdaddy · 23/04/2010 08:27

DS is now 1 yr + 2 weeks

Night time sleep is 7:30pm till 10:30pm (wake for night feed) then 11pm till 7am. He often stirs once in the middle of the night, but usually settles himself back down.

Up to his 1st birthday, the daytime nap was generally anything between 45 minutes and 2 hours. Although in the last week he has more regularly started sleeping 2 hours in the daytime.

We are in the process of trying to drop the night feed, so not sure how much long undisturbed nights will last.

NellyTheElephant · 23/04/2010 21:04

DD1 and DD2 (who both slept approx 7-7 at that age) followed a similar pretty set pattern of a nap at 9.30am ish for approx 45 mins then nap after lunch from around 1.30pm ish for 1.5 - 2hrs.

DS who has just turned one (also a good night sleeper 7-7) is a lot more flexible in the day as he gets toted around from pillar to post, but he still needs at least 2 hrs in the day. So if I'm at home in the morning i'll put him to bed 9.30ish and he'll often sleep until 11am or even up to 2 hrs and I'll then put him back to bed for 30 - 45 mins in the afternoon (up by 4pm latest usually) or he'll catnap in the car or something. If I'm out and about in the morning he might catnap in the car / buggy but then need a good long nap in the afternoon. If I'm out and about all day he is v v grumpy by bedtime.....

They are all different. If your DD only sleeps well at night if she doesn't sleep in the daytime then just go with it. I'd rather be on the run all day and have a good nights' sleep than be up and down all night.

countrylover · 25/04/2010 10:06

DS2 sleeps 7.30pm until 6.30am. But his daytime naps are rubbish. At the moment it's 20 mins in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon. He doesn't seem too bothered by it though, it's more for me...I can't get anything done!

I've also tried putting him to bed later at 8pm in the hope of him sleeping later but it had the opposite effect, he woke at 6am instead.

nobodysfool · 25/04/2010 10:25

DS is 15 minths and doesnt have a nap in the morning (my choice so he has a good afternoon sleep) then nap at 12.30 after lunch (no later than 2.30) then bed at 6.30pm and he sleeps through till 6.30am.
I found that cutting out the morning nap made hime sleep really well for his afternoon nap. Hope that helps.
