DO they really make babies sleep better?
Honest opinions please? I co-slept early on with DS then from 15 months when he went in a bed he kept up with the frequent feeding through the night (usually at least 3-4 times) until he was 2 when I stopped bfing altogether. Kind of keen to see if I can avoid it this time. I love the convenience and loveliness of co-sleeping but I don't know if I can handle establishing another frequent night feeding pattern.... agh don't know what to do!

I have used one with DS2 and since he came home from the hospital he's settled beautifully in his hammock. He's now 5 months and am thinking of moving him to a cot but mainly because he's such a big boy.
I love mine, it looks so snug and cosy, seems to sort of wrap around him in a cocoon fashion.

randomama · 20/04/2010 13:28

thanks scarlotti,
seems like in most cases they only last until about 5 months. Will have a think about whether it feels worth it...

I used one with DS, he had reflux and really helped with that. He was in it until 10 months.

scarlotti · 20/04/2010 14:11

They go up to 25lbs on the normal spring, 40lbs on the bigger spring. If DS2 wasn't quite so big I'd be using it for longer. Haven't got a mattress for the cotbed yet so he might still be in it a while.
It was a godsend for the early months I have to say, I never had any trouble with him going off to sleep or staying asleep.
I bought mine on eBay too so only paid half the RRP for it.

randomama · 20/04/2010 14:58

yeah I was thinking of getting one off ebay. hmm. can't decide.
I still have 11 weeks so i'm not in a rush or owt, just wish I could make up my mind...
thanks both for your input though. x

Yes, yes and yes! Absolute godsend. Kept my DD (98th percentile weight and height) in it until a year. She still sleeps like a dream. The best bit is when they reach 4- 5 months and they start to 'bounce' themselves at night back to sleep. Fabulous! Can't recommend it highly enough.

Scarlotti, don't rush to take DS out! Believe me, if it can fit my monster until a year, it will take yours for a few more months.

Chunkamatic · 20/04/2010 15:09

i got one for DS2 from ebay for under half RRP. He's only 8 weeks and whilst it hasnt worked the miracles I'd hoped, it is certianly very much easier to settle him in than the cot we used for ds1. He sleeps about 4 hrs in it for the first part of the night then comes in to bed with me. I'm hoping to increase the time he spends in it though - he is definately comfortable. Unfortunately he is also very hnugry and the amby doesn't help with that!!!

scarlotti · 20/04/2010 20:44

Oranges - interesting that your DD stayed in it so long. Am in no rush tbh, and am inherantly lazy so can't see the mattress being bought anytime soon. Did you have any problems moving from hammock to cot when you did make the move?

Chunk - 4 hours is a very good stretch for an 8 week old we do the same from his middle of the night feed and over time it's just moved later through the night.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 21/04/2010 17:56

Scarlotti- yes took a week or two for her to get used to a cot. More than anything it was tricky for us to know how to get her back to sleep if she woke up as we used to just bouncing her. Basically a bit of a pain but not desperate IYSWIM.

FSB · 21/04/2010 21:00

we had one with DD until she was 8.5mo and tbh, it didn't work the miracles i was expecting. she has been a pretty terrible sleeper from the start and never really 'settled herself' in the hammock. maybe she'd have been worse in a normal cot, but i fail to imagine how!!

i did like the snugness of it, and the no risk of cotdeath (a particular irrational fear of mine!), and it's very handy that it's so portable, so you can take their normal bed with you when you travel. but, in terms of magical sleeping powers, i'm afraid we didn't see any

also, if you have a bad back, it's very hard to get the baby in and out of it, as you have to lean right over with your arms outstretched...

scarlotti · 21/04/2010 21:00

Good to know, that's been our only concern to date.

ib · 21/04/2010 21:04

You should be aware that there's been a safety recall on them in the US - they are supposed to send out repair kits but a couple of months after ordering mine I'm still witing for it.

scarlotti · 21/04/2010 21:38

ib - the two incidents which triggered the safety recall were proved to be user error i.e. they hadn't used them correctly. One had the hammock hanging from a hook in the ceiling and the other was not put together properly.

More info on their website.

we loved ours and it has been permanent loan to other friends since dd was 1 yr (with a waiting list!!) There has been great reports from everyone who has used it so well worth the money imo.

scoutliam · 25/04/2010 17:17

Dd is six months and still in hers.
I can't compare as she's our pfb but she's always slept well and as fsb said the fact that it's so portable is a huge plus.

I've no intention of moving her into a cot until she's at least a year, don't want to mess with a good thing.

toomuchtooyoung · 29/04/2010 11:00

anyone know why they shouldn't be hung from a hook in the ceiling?

sorry - would do a search, but phone's playing up and won't show me anything

wellbalanced · 29/04/2010 11:35

We used on with DS birth-6month (borrowed i and wanted back-new mattress) He loved it and only took few days to get used to cot but was still up in night at that point anyway.
I took mine away with us as DS will not sleep in travel cot, was fab, now we co-sleep when away!
My friends baby would noy be put down for the 1st 7week of being born and i rec'd the amby and she went in it no probs, they moved her at 8mth with no prob at all..

jammydodger · 29/04/2010 11:41

We bought one, it didn't work, no idea why, or what we did wrong! A friend also bought one having seen ours (before our baby arrived and I was very excited about it...), and she also found it didn't really help wit settling either, we both sold ours on ebay. A real shame as I had such high hopes for it!
