Anyone else sleeping badly even though baby sleeps through

....or is it just me?

He's 8 1/2 months old and sleeps 8-8 with a wake for food at 6, or 8-7 with no wakings.

This has only been for the last few weeks. I seem to wake at 4ish and be all alert in case he wakes for milk at 6. If he does, I can go back to sleep after feeding him. If he doesn't, he's up at 7 and I've then been awake for 3 hours!

I think the previous months of disturbed sleep have taken their toll and I've now got my own sleep problem... Has this happened to anyone else?

It did, but then I got used to the unbroken sleeep. I too was used to the cycle of wake up, feed baby, and then dunk! back to sleep and I agree its weird when that happens.

I didn't really start to sleep deeply and properly again until my eldest was about 3. As you say, you are alert and listening for his waking. Until he's a bit older, you may not, like me, be able to relax enough to sleep deeply through the night.

DS is only 4 months, but I've had this problem too . My middle-of-the-night insomnia has improved as I've got used to him sleeping for longer, although I'm not quite back to normal sleep yet.

Yes me too and am exhausted from it this week - so much so that I've been terribly grumpy all week and cried at lunch with my girlfriends today - mortified!
DS (pfb) is 12wks and miraculously is sleeping from 7pm till 6/half 6/7am ish with no feed but has moments most nights where he'll cry in his sleep for just a couple of mins then settle himself again (often he's crying in his sleep) so even though I don't have to get up for him it wakes me and I watch the clock and wait for him to settle himself (if its more than a couple of mins that he cries I'll get up and settle him back to sleep but that's really unusual...) Anyway once I've woken I'm wide awake and can't get back to sleep and its made worse by listening to bloody DH's snoring and silently seething at the fact he seems to not wake when DS cries despite the fact he claims to be a light sleeper.....
Had huge row this morning as DH dared to say he was tired.... He NEVER wakes up when DS cried and always gets a full 8 hours - I know its not a competition as to who is most tired but really, if it was I sooooo win hands down!!!
I never used to have any problems sleeping even when I was waking up 10 times a night to pee when pregnant I'd always drop straight back to sleep...... I wish I could go back to that but guess I just have to accept that being a mummy naturally changes how deeply you sleep....

Sorry OP - have just whinged and not offered any advice at all but guess its nice to know were not the only ones affected xxxx

Hate to be the voice of doom, but I have had prob 5 or 6 full nights of sleep since I got pg with ds1 in 2003, even tho both kids sleep through and have done for ages!

i suffer from insomnia, started when DD was born and we had sleepless nights. It never returned to normal ever again. I used to love a good 10 hours sleep (12 at the weekend!) no problem sleeping til 11am at the weekend. Now, even when i do get to lie-in, i am awake by 7am and fed up of trying to stay asleep by 8am. I also wake lots in the night (currently i have a 5month old, so not surprising, but normally i would probably wake between 2-4am. and start the morning wake up at 6am.

countrylover · 18/04/2010 09:06

I had insomnia for two years after DS1 and one year after DS2. I used to think I was the only one when I had DS1 but that was my pre-mumsnet days. I too have had DC's who have slept from 7pm until 7am from around 12 weeks. Then there was me up half the night whilst they slept through.

It's soooooo frustrating and it does get you down after a while. I hope it helps to know that you're not alone. Eventually it does sort itself out though, I found it helped when I told myself I no longer had to be on high alert 24 hours a day anymore.

janiemouse · 19/04/2010 10:23

Nice to know I'm not the only one but I'm also sorry there's more people the same!

Last night he was whinging between 2.30 and 6, don't think I went back to sleep after 2.30.... My eyebags are like nothing on earth this morning.

Sympathy to all of you from me, too. DS is coming up for 12 weeks and sleeps brilliantly now, but I often get up (and stay up) at around 3, which is a killer. It's do depressing when it starts getting light and sunny at dawn and you know you haven't slept properly but have to be up soon. It's a vicious circle - the less you sleep, the more you worry about it, which in turn affects your sleep..
I have got to the stage where I'm seriously considering dropping bfeeding just to take some tablets for it.
