noisy newborn sleeper

My three week old DS is a really noisy sleeper he snores and snuffles all night long which means that even when he is asleep it is difficult for me and DH to sleep. He is in our room at the moment in a moses basket, but I cant imagine it would be much better to hear it through a baby monitor.

He sleeps much more quietly in a car seat, must be because he is more upright, is there any safe way of propping them up slightly in the crib? or any one else have any other ideas??

My DS used to be so noisy at night, we felt like we were sleeping in a zoo!! Sorry don't have any suggestions as to how to quiten I think we just got used to it but he is much less noisy now (7mths old). Have just moved him into his own room and think he seems louder through the baby monitor as it's so sensitive.

This sounds completely normal. Newborns have irregular breathing with lots of grunts and snorts. It used to worry me sick with DD and I hardly slept because I wanted to listen to her breathe just in case she stopped! Thankfully this type of breathing doesn't last long. I was very thankful to have her sleeping right next to me though, just for peace of mind.

They need to sleep flat at this age (and shouldn't spend too long in a car seat type position). The only thing we tried was a folded up towel under the head end of the moses basket mattress, i.e. a tiny incline but still essentially flat.

you can prop one end of the mattress up, by rolling a towel up and putting underneath

is his breathing ok all the rest of the time? I only ask because my ds1 had trachea malacia (floppy windpipe) which made his breathing sound horrendous

Thanks ladies,
will get him checked at next HV appointment, he is pretty grunty when feeding too but otherwise fine. Will try the slightly raised mattress. He woke me 1.5 hours before he actually woke this morning!

Once you're happy that your little one is well, then you could try what I used when my 18wk old was new - earplugs! I would just use one to cut the noise levels, and I could hear his voice clearly if he really needed me, just not every huff and puff. Now we co-sleep and apparently we both snore like trains but that's DH's problem, I sleep soundly now my brain has readjusted to what my new normal night time sounds like.
