DS is 10 days old and in a moses basket in our room. Trouble is he is so noisy at night i can't sleep!!! He can go up to 4 hours between feeds but i think i go to him too soon sometimes as i'm already awake.

I'm shattered even though he is sleeping really well for a newborn...i think anyway. I've even got a white noise machine that i'm putting on to help me sleep, not him!!!

I'm worried about moving him to his nursery (next room to us) cos of all the sids advice.

What would you do?

DS1 was exactly the same - we moved him to his own room about a week after he came home and we all slept tonnes better after that. You can get a monitor to put under the mattress which will tell you if he stops breathing. We never bothered with a monitor - he was just down the corridor from us - and I always woke up immediately if he was crying. It was what worked for us at the time. DS2 was a much quieter sleeper and was in with us until he was 5 months old. Do what works for you and your family - and congratulations on your lovely DS.

I used earplugs until I got used to the noise - you can still hear any crying through them, but it does block out some of the noise. I did get used to DS's sounds and he is still in the same room as me at 13 weeks (and he has got quieter). I did have insomnia quite a bit during the first couple of weeks, which did disappear - a friend had a similar problem and said she thought it was to do with the post-birth adrenalin (don't know if that had any scientific basis, though!)

My little one is 15 weeks old and still in our room (which I actually find a comfort now) but in the first couple of weeks she was so noisey she sounded like a farmyard animal, we were like WTF??? Mumnet reassured me that it's all normal! It only lasted a few weeks and she is alot quieter now!

I'd keep him with me. He's so tiny still. I don't think you can go to him too soon if he is going for 4 hours between feeds at 10 days old, he needs to feed that often at least.

I moved DS1 out of our room at the same age, for the same reason. I think the "experts" would say don't, but for us my (selfish) need for sleep was more important.

I would second the ear plugs. I didnt use them the first time round and found it really difficult but got much more sleep with ear plugs second time round.

Thank you for the replies, nice to know its not just me!!.....he doesn't often do 4 hours between feeds and i found myself feeding every 2 hours as i thought he was waking up!

Anyway - i moved him out last night after a lot of thought...and we both slept so much better! I'm not totally happy about the situation, but with other DC's i can't sleep in the day.

We moved our DS out of our room after two nights - far too noisy - I also did my own version of controlled crying (which I dare not mention on Mumsnet) - have never, ever had a problem with my DS sleeping - now aged 9 still goes to bed happily at 7.30pm. Glad it worked for you last night.
