Won't settle after night feed!

DS is 3 months and EBF. He is doing really well, eating every 2-3 hours during the day and doing a good stretch at night (8-2) However the problem arises when I feed him when he wakes at 2 ish, I am unable to get the wind out of him and get him babck off to sleep. He will burp lots but will wriggle and squirm in whatever position I lay him in. He is on Infacol, I have his cot propped up but he grunts and squrims and is often sick. We are both very tired and not sure what to do now. I now it is only for a short time but I have two others to contend with and it isn't good for any of us at the minute. Any tips that I could try?

Wow, 8-2 is very good! When my DS (also 3 months) was difficult to settle back at night, I tried co-sleeping. Although he always seemed to need burping normally, he managed to drop straight off after feeds like this. However, your DS sounds a lot worse than mine.

It might be worth a try - even if you have to get up at the end of the feed to burp him etc, if you're lying down while feeding, you can at least doze through the feed itself. I found it made all the difference to how tired I felt. (You might want to put a towel under your sheet though, especially if he's sick a lot.)

Have you had him checked out for reflux?

Thanks. Have tried the co sleep thing but he o nly snacks really and won't even settle lying by me. He is generally fine in the day. What is relux?

Hi Button Moon. Reflux is where the stomach is immature and the sphincter muscle which normally closes to stop acid rising into their oeshopgus (spelt wrong I know) doesn't close propery and thus after (or before) a feed, acid bubbles up.

Our 11 wk ds had severe reflux and would not feed without a fight, she would arch her back, squirm constantly, turn from her bottle and cry during a feed. It was awful. We thought it was wind or colic but having read something about reflux got it checked out by our GP.

She was tested for reflux by doing a 24hr ph test which involves a tube into their tummy (heartbreaking but necessary) and it was diagnosed and she has been prescribed C&G Comfort formula,Infant Gavison, Mottillium and Omaprazile (again, spelt wrong I expect!). We are told she will grow out of this and that things will get better once she is on solids, but the medication is helping a great deal.

Please if you are worried do INSIST on a reflux test as at first the hospital tried to write it off as colic.

ButtonMoon, after two hours last night lying next to DS with first a dummy then a breast in his mouth trying to persuade him to settle next to me, I sympathise! So much for co-sleeping being the miracle solution.

You'll probably find it difficult to do with other DCs, but can you try to get to bed earlier so you can catch up on sleep a bit? Perhaps get your DH to do bedtime with the others? (Although I only have the one DC, so I have no idea what I'm talking about really)
