Advice needed on putting down a sleepy/sleeping baby from a sling without waking him up!

I know this is similar to M78's thread on slings, but since I'm after slightly more specific advice, I thought it would be worth starting a separate thread.

DS is 12 weeks old and will only go to sleep during the day in a sling (and needs to spend most of his day sleeping). He's a big boy and I'd like to be able to put him down once he's asleep (and eventually try putting him down when drowsy if I can). I have a Close baby carrier and a single ring sling.

When we've tried, it has usually taken two of us to get him out of the Close carrier (which is the one that both he & I prefer to use) and he's often woken up, although I have sometimes taken him out when I thought he was waking up, and he's stayed asleep .

Does anyone have any tips for being able to put him down e.g. techniques, how long to wait until he's 'properly' asleep?

We meet again AngelDog! (day time nap tips thread)
It sounds like we are living mirrored lives with 12 week old DS's!
I've found with my sling(sorry dont know what your looks like), its easier if I take my bit off to put DS down, so he is still in sling IYSWIM. mine is the more old fashion type, not the hommock variety

I managed to get my dd2 down from my ring sling by leaning over my bed, like I was laying on her but not iyswim! Then loosening the ring bit and carefully wriggling myself out backwards. DD was still lying on her bit so I'd leave the sling on the bed with her. This was all ok until she could roll and then had to stop...

Hope I've made sense!

Thanks for both suggestions. I've not tried it yet, as I've managed to get him off to sleep without the sling once today and twice yesterday, so that's where I'm going to focus my efforts...we're small steps but the progress is exciting.

houmousandcarrotsandwich - there does seem to be quite a crop of 3 month olds like ours! I do find it cheering to know that other people are having similar problems. It makes me feel less inadequate dispirited when I have conversations like one I had this morning - a friend whose DD is a week younger than DS was saying that she found it frustrating that after having made the effort to get up and dressed, her DD would instantly fall asleep after the first feed of the day.

Never mind, I'm getting the hang of spending my days watching the poor child like a hawk for the tiniest sign of sleepiness.
