Newborn only sleeps in our arms...normal?

Our daughter (first baby) is 7 days old, very young I know, but I'm stressed out and exhausted! She will only sleep in our arms so we are doing shifts throughout the day and night. She will not go in her moses basket for more than 5 mins, even if we make sure she is fast asleep before putting her down - we have tried putting in blanket with my smell on them, and comforting her by patting her belly etc,
Is this normal for a newborn?
Any tips/advice/experiences would be really great to hear right now!

Thank you!

At the risk of bringing down wrath on me I also found co-sleeping really helpful as my DD also wouldnt sleep alone at first (though I know its not for everyone). I just tried putting her in the moses basket for day naps at least once every day but letting her sleep on me if she wouldnt settle in it. Gradually she got more and more used to it and now at 15 weeks she is doing all of her sleeping in the crib apart from when she recently had a bad cold and was up and down all night...so it doesnt have to last forever if you dont want it to (but can if you do!)

Anyway - it got me through the first crazy couple of months so just thought I'd add my piece :)

Great thread thanks! my DS is 2.5 weeks and we are struggling to get him to sleep anywhere but on us - nice to know its normal. he will sleep in the moses basket but only for about half an hour at a time, he happily goes much longer either in the bed or on one of us. Well continue to do a mix of all until he will go longer in the basket.

Totally normal and it will pass. We found the crib sheets were quite cold so woke our DD up. A hot water bottle on them was useful (obviously remove it before putting your baby in and also check that the sheets aren't too hot).

DD also liked to be swaddled for a while (you can get GroBag ones that have velcro to make it really easy). DD didn't like the sling though so I just spent a lot of time sat on the sofa with her Grin

Again, getting out and about with your newborn in the buggy/sling might get her off to sleep and save your arms and we found the fresh air good for all of us.
