Duvet in cotbed

Got ds (2.4) a duvet at the weekend as he has started to get excema on his stomach we think from getting too hot at night. The sides are still up on his cotbed as i don't feel ready to take them off yet!! Two things, one, is it dangerous to have him now possibly able to climb out, and two he is waking up a bit when the duvet comes off, how can i explain how to pull it back on himself or is it just a matter of time?

As i write this i realise maybe it was silly to move onto getting a duvet, is it going to be confusing for him to go back to a grobag (had duvet for 2 nights) after making such a big deal about him having a duvet, him choosing the cover etc. and the fact he's growing up - got another due end May.

Any thoughts/advice??

Do the sides drop? Once able to climb out it's safer to lower them as less distance to fall, but still useful to stop falls out of bed (if removed sides completely)
Could you tuck duvet in one side?

Thanks mspontipine i'll see if the sides go any lower and try tucking him in super tight tonight!

we tuck the duvet in a lot at one side and at the bottom so DS doesn't get it wrapped around him and get too hot.

What clothes are you putting him in - could you put him in one less layer?

don't worry about him not pulling the duvet up - he'll get it eventually.

mine rarely spend all night under the quilt, but they seem fine.

minimoonumbertwo · 23/02/2010 12:19

lisa you are lucky they don't wake up!

Thanks pure, will try that tonight. His excema is definitely better since using the duvet so i sort of don't want to go back to grobag with less clothes now.

Plus he looks very cute all cosy with the duvet

My twins (2.7) are in cotbeds with the outside removed and sleep under a single bed duvet tucked lengthways around the mattress so they can't fall out. They don't move around in the night as much as they used to though.

They only wear thin cotton pyjamas (when they haven't taken them off, a current favourite hobby) and we turn off the radiator when they go to bed so they don't overheat. It seems to work and they're getting the idea about staying under the covers. And they get an extra blanket or two on nights when it's really cold.

We used to put cushions on the floor in case they fell out but have stopped as they never did. They seem cosy enough and nowadays and rarely wake up, until too early for us of course...

Hi Mini,
We changed DS' cotbed into a bed (i.e. took sides off) when he was 2.1, like Peetle, we used a single bed duvet and put it on sideways so it tucked right under. We did also use a bedguard on his bed (about a tenner in Mothercare or other stores). Is good because it folds down during day for easy access, but does stop him falling out - not that he ever looked like doing so with the duvet tucked round him. Is a pain if you've especially bought a cotbed duvet though.

Should have added that at 2.5 he moved to a big boy bed with the bedguard on and a normal duvet, but I tuck a single sheet crossways over the bed to keep him tucked in - he still hasn't looked like falling out .

Had to move him because DD was imminent!

Maybe you could just tuck a single sheet crossways over his bed and then have the duvet you've bought on top of that, the single sheet should stop him kicking duvet off so much and as it is tucked in, should stop him getting too cold if the duvet does slip?
