How many still have 3 year old nappers?

Hi

I have often searched Mumsnet for advice but this is the first time of posting! So I was hoping that I might be able to pick some brains to help me sort my dd's sleep out. My dd is 3 and 2 months and apart from the early days, has been a pretty good sleeper up until recently. (I feel a bit bad moaning when I know I have been lucky really!) but her sleep pattern has now gone a bit haywire which unfortunately really seems to effect her behaviour. Since having croup about a month ago, she seems to have just been overtired pretty much constantly, sometimes she naps and some days she doesn't and when she's overtired she wakes at about 5 to 5.30 am. The less sleep she has, the less sleep she has if that makes sense! So I wondered if I dropped her nap whether things might balance out after a while. So I know children are all different, but I was just wondering how many others of roughly the same age still nap, just to give me a rough guide.

Thanks for reading and any help.

Ds is teh same age and still naps from 11-12 usually. Imo sleeps begets sleep.

BeckyBendyLegs · 16/02/2010 17:21

My ds2 napped 1.30pm-3pm until 3 yrs and 6 months when he stopped of own accord - typing oned handed ds3 asleep on my chest

BeckyBendyLegs · 16/02/2010 17:23

Sleep begets sleep - sooooo true.

emsyh · 17/02/2010 17:16

Thank you all for your help, I totally agree about sleep begets sleep and have always gone by that previously. I think I will persevere with naps and hope that soon we will catch up with the overtiredness!

My dd is nearly 4 and still needs a nap. I can't tell you how often people try and tell me she "shouldn't" be napping at her age but I know my girl and she just needs a sleep to get through the day without crashing and burning.

mistlethrush · 17/02/2010 17:27

My ds is nearly 5 and still occasionally has a nap - not often now, but still He sleeps MUCH better when he has had a nap and isn't overtired - we get through the bathtime routine much more efficiently, with less fuss, and he is unlikely to stir... if he's overtired it takes longer and he might reappear downstairs 5 or 10mins later....

Ds1 napped 4/5 times a week until he started school, then continued naqpping at weekends until partway through Y1.

Dd dropped her nap at 4.5y.

Ds2 was still napping every day when I weaned him at 3yo, but rapidly stopped napping because he couldn't go to sleep without a feed. He desperately still needs a nap - the boy's a different child when he naps, but that only happens now maybe once a week, when he has reached his absolute limit of exhaustion. The day after his nap, I adore him. The day before his nap...he's lucky to still be alive at bedtime.

IME an overtired child sleeps less well and is more likely to wake earlier.

Some 4 year old do still need naps! My friend is shocked that my 2.2 charge still naps people sometimes don't realise kids aren't al the same.

LastTrainToGeneva · 17/02/2010 17:46

dd dropped her daytime naps just short of 3 years old, but there are days she's so tired she'll drop off on the couch. Some of her friends still have one nap, others don't. Depends on the child

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 17/02/2010 18:54

DS1 is 3 and he still has a nap nearly everyday usually for nearly 2hrs

when he doesn't nap he is really manic between about 4-6pm in the evening

and has always slept better at night if he has had a good sleep during the day

BeckyBendyLegs · 18/02/2010 09:52

I had naps until I started school. I remember loving going up to bed after nursery with my Richard Scary book and a curly wurly. I'd then fall asleep and feel much better able to face the rest of the day. I remember starting school and really missing my nap! I only wish I could nap now

PrettyCandles · 18/02/2010 12:16

I remember having naps at nursery school, possibly even in Reception. We used to put out folding canvas beds, and have a blanket each. Most days one of us would wet the bed!

giggly · 18/02/2010 12:23

My dd 4 1/2 still naps most days for about 2 hours, and then back to sleep about 8 pm.

I am told constantly that she should have stopped by now, but I think what they really mean is that her naps interfere with activities and visiting.

Also me and dd 20 weeks nap at the same time so win win as far as I am concerned. DD 1 is a nightmare if she gets overtired.

In fact must go to now as it is dd nap time

She did today! She woke early and then napped from 2:30-4:30pm! But i had to lie down with her to get her to nap, her behaviour was out of control she was so tired, but she slept eventually. If she had not napped, she would have been hard to settle tonight, and like yours she would sleep badly all night. As it was I thought she would not sleep tonight, but she was in bed and asleep only half hour later than her normal time of 7:30pm! I wonder though if she is coming down with something, as she tends to sleep more, or rather needs to sleep more but does not always if not well, or about to be unwell.

When DD had croup about 18 months or so ago, she was very tired/overtired for a long time afterwards and we gave her more naps for a good few weeks.

emsyh · 21/02/2010 19:41

Thanks everyone.
DD has now napped every day since Thurday for between 11/2 and 2 hours and is now waking after 7.00 rather than 5.30 .
I agree with you giggly, the amount of comments I get about still having a napper, and people moaning because it interferes with activities, some people just don't get the effect lack of sleep has on a child!

Phew thought mine was the odd one out ! DD 3.11 sleeps 1.5hrs daily and at night 7.30/8 -6.30/ 7. If she misses it she is a pain and takes ages to settle at night. I am happy to let her go with the flow as she is happier all round and we can do more in the afternoon.

[wishing there was a 'weeping' emoticon] - 3.6 year old DD stopped napping during the day at around 13 months and didn't really nap all that reliably before then either tbh. Am very of you all!
