Disturbed sleep in 2 year old

DS2 has never been a brilliant sleeper, but has had periods of months where he has slept through about 12 hours at night. Has been waking nearly every night since October. Now has settled into a pattern of waking 2 or 3 times between 11 and about 2. Occasionally he is just awake and will go back to sleep by himself (with a bit of whining) but much more often he wakes up screaming. Often seems in pain/arching his back/squirming. Sometimes will say that he is sore when asked - sometimes says it's his tummy - but I wouldn't say he would be old enough to be v reliable about that kind of communication in the day, let alone mid scream.

He often only needs to hear our voice to go back to sleep. We're often back in bed within a minute. If you leave him he's screaming blue murder within minutes and and won't settle easily at all.

We are starting to wonder if something he is eating is bothering his stomach. Maybe milk? The last few days he has only had milk with his cereal in the morning, but this doesn't seem to have helped at all. Before he would have had yoghurts or custard prob once a day and some milk (maybe 2-3oz) before bed. I'm not keen to keep him off milk products for too long.

Any ideas? How long would I have to cut milk out for to see if that's the problem. Do I just cut it out - or substitute soya milk or the like straight away? Something I can try on my own or should I speak to a Dr first?

Are you sure he's not teething still? My DS went a bit loopy for a few nights when he was cutting some big teeth and was writhing all over the bedroom floor and arching his back. He wouldn't let me touch him and just layed there screaming. All of a sudden he went back to sleep.
They can get a tummy ache with teeth. Have you tried giving him camomile teething powder to see if it calms him (and his tummy).
I would defo take him to the GP though - before you decide it's the milk. It might not be and in thinking it's the milk, you might be missing something completely different.
