Grunting in sleep - any ideas

My DS is 5 weeks old and is very noisy when he sleeps at night. I have googled, and found that some babies are just noisy, but DS does not always make the noises, so I wondered if anything might be causing it, and if anyone else has this problem.

Some nights it is all night long and I get now sleep, other nights it is only 1/2 the night (from 3am, 4am or 5am) on good nights it is only for 10 mins after I have fed him (usually around 21:30, 00:30 and 03:00, but then he makes noise around 04:00)

He makes grunting noises as though he is constipated, he was sounding like a creaky door too, but this sound seems to have stopped. When I look at him his eyes are closed, but he is restless moving his head from side to side and his face is screwed up.

I have tried winding him, cuddling him (on a good night he will re-settle after a cuddle if he makes noise at 04:00. Feeding him also doesn't work. I have also tried turning the heating on in case he is cold.

Oh - these noises are REALLY LOUD! There is no way I can sleep through them, so any ideas of what might cause them or how to stop them would be great. I was thinking maybe trapped wind, but even after a massive fart the noises carry on.

All sounds normal to me - both DS's did this in the early days. DH used to say DS2 sounded like a pelican {hmm]

They do grow out of it at around three months but until then invest in some ear plugs. Don't worry you'll still hear DS cry!

sorry, sleep deprived here myself .. i meant

Emalina - sounds exactly like our dd (and I believe it's very very common) - at first I tried settling her, but realised that she was fast asleep and not in any distress.

I'm not sure there is a way to stop them: but you might be surprised what you'll learn to sleep through...good luck

OMG! I could have written this exact post. My little one is nearly 5 weeks and this morning after her 3am feed, I put her down and she grunted her way through until 6.00am!!! It was really loud and really disturbed my sleep, I picked her up out of her cot to wind her thinking that was what was up and then realised she was in fact asleep and quickly popped her back in her cot!!! I thought maybe she might be developing a cold but perhaps it is nothing and just was little babies do!

ds did this! we had to move him into his own room earlier than we would have cause he was so loud, he woke us up loads! he sounded like hermann munster!

mrsflux · 27/01/2010 12:23

Ds did this too. It'll pass eventually, if you are really that tired you'll fall asleep- trust me!

A moose in heat is what mine sounded like. He grew out of it after a few weeks. He usually did it for only bits of the night too, and they gradually got less.

We had exactly the same thing. DS would start grunting and straining like a constipated sow after his last night feed (usually 4amish) until the morning. It drove me crazy. I second Countrylover, get some earplugs, unlike mrsflux I just couldn't sleep through it.

blinder · 27/01/2010 20:15

my dd has stopped doing this. she stopped around 3 months. it doesn't last long!

Emalina · 27/01/2010 21:24

Ha Ha Ha - well your replies have certainly cheered me up - constipated sow and moose in heat!! Yes that's the sound!

I hope it stops soon! Earplugs won't help me, I tried them once at a festival (while trying to sleep on the campsite) and they didn't make any difference.

Yes - most times he is asleep, but sometimes I look and his eyes are open so maybe on those occasions it is wind. Sleep deprivation goes with being a parent I guess - blimey this is way harder than I ever imagined!!
