1 year old daytime nap disaster - 25 mins max - tired baby!

DD was one last week. She has never been a very good daytime napper (I think an hour is about the longest ever), but in the last 3 weeks things have gone from bad to worse. It's usually not too bad getting her off - either in cot, or car, or buggy, but wherever she goes to sleep she wakes about 25 minutes later, usually crying. We've tried wind-down time, white noise (used to work, no longer does), leaving her to self-settle when she wakes etc etc.

This would be OK (other than the impossibility of getting anything done) were it not for the fact that she is clearly tired - eye-rubbing etc. I think she is not getting enough sleep. She does sleep well at night usually 7-8. Is 13 + 1 hour of naps enough? How can we get her to nap better?

And before you suggest it, only giving her one nap doesn't help either - still wakes after 25 minutes. TIA

Very jealous of your nights! 14 hours in 24 is exactly what the books say for babies this age.

Saying that, she might feel better in the day if you reallocated some of her night sleep to a nap after lunch. Have you tried waking her at 7 to see if she'll nap better? Not sure I could face that, but you could try!

My DS (13 mo) gets much less sleep than this, despite my best efforts. More like 10.5-11.5 hours at night and 1.5-2 hrs in naps (across 1 or 2 naps, dep on the day).

MOM - yes, I know she gets good night sleep and I might try getting her up a bit earlier to see if that helps. They just won't do what the rules say

Sounds like more than my 13mo gets as well. We get no more than 11 hours at night at best (and often an hour awake at some point in the night) and two shortish naps, rarely more than an hour put together.

What time does she nap - could you leave it a bit longer before putting her down? Make sure she is more tired. Or conversely - if she is overtired, try putting her down a bit earlier for a nap? Look for the 'sleepy window' and get her down as soon as you spot a yawn?

and if anyone knows the secret of longer naps... would love to know....

ds3 was also 1 last week and has gone from 1hr am nap, 2 hrs pm nap and 12 hrs at night (6.30am - 6.30pm) to forgetting how to sleep during his cot during the day and he is also tired and falling asleep in pushchair or car seat for an hr max. Today was 40 mins (in pushchair).

Have decided to be pleased he sleeps right through for normally 12 hrs and just try for 1 nap during the day after lunch and will see how that goes.

thanks for replies - utterly utterly normal then? I only really know one other baby well, DN, and she is the kind of child who would nap for 3 hours at a time. DD seems fine, really (except when we leave on the thingy that flashes lights and plays nursery rhymes and wakes her up )and I am grateful for the nights (it wasn't always like this I can tell you )

I think most people who get the 3 hour naps are getting more like 10-10.5 hour nights. That's what it seems like anyway - they have a long nap in the afternoon but then don't go to bed until after 8 pm and wake at 6 or 6:30. So the same amount of sleep, just divided up differently.

At this age, I can't imagine you're going to get 13 hour nights plus 2-3 hr naps. But oh wouldn't it be nice!
