Last night I slept all night for the first time in 12 months. I started weaning DD 2 weeks ago when I was ill with a bug (simply couldn't get up in the night to feed her, so DH went in and offered cows milk). Since then she has started actually eating solids, drinking cows milk from a bottle and I'm down from 8 feeds a day to 1. She started sleeping much better at night, and last night, didn't wake up at all. If I hadn't caught the flu when I did, I'd still be feeding her all day and all night (and working full time into the bargain). I know this won't make a difference for most sleep deprived mums, and I may get flamed for this, but it seems that BF a one year old on demand wasn't doing her much good (she has been in the 5th percentile, down from the 75th at birth). Now she is gaining weight and can sleep all night. Much to my surprise, she doesn't seem bothered about the switch from the breast to bottle and really eating solids (instead of playing with her food she now eats it). Anyway, thought I would share my experience, hope it does someone some good.

"BF a one year old wasn't doing her much good???"

Being heavy isn't the holy grail, you know.

Glad you're getting more sleep, though.

glad you had a good experience

wish me luck for some sleep in the years a head
I still bf on demand gecko who will be three in three weeks
BUT what you have done wont help

she already eats like a horse (more than my nine year old) and she drinks cows milk too

Sorry, bad wording on my part - DD has met all her milestones and is a very happy child, so BF has done her a lot of good. But I think I focused so much on continuing to BF on demand that it closed my eyes to other options. I know weight isn't that important, you have no idea how many times I sighed and gave the 'food is for fun till the age of one' retort when people questioned me about why my DD wouldn't eat/was so little. Not the right choice for everyone, but after pumping twice a day at work for the past 9 months, and not sleeping at night, cows milk and a baby who is now interested in eating solids is the right answer for me
