Is it safe to put a 6 month old who can't roll to sleep on their front?

Dd's sleep has completely gone to pot for no obvious reason (not ill, teething, doesn't seem hungry) - I also have 3 year old ds and am really struggling. She seems to sleep much better on her tummy when on my or dh's chest so am considering trying to put her down like this in her cot.

She is 6 months, has good neck and back control (nearly sitting up) but can't roll. Is it safe at this age or should I still always put her down on her back?

I did but the advice is to put on back.
My DS slept miles better on tummy so turned him at abot 6.5mth, Now thou he rolls onto back and gets tangled in sleeping bag, thats waking him several times a nite!!

First nite i turned him i hardly slept, he did 11.5hrs which he never did and has never done since!!!

Was just about to ask a similar thing. My 6m DS can roll - in fact this has been a bit of a problem lately as he tends to roll about in his cot (sometimes I find him with his head at the bottom of the cot). Anyway, this morning he woke at 5 but was just babbling away and not distressed so I left him and he fell back to sleep. When I went in to get him he was asleep on his front. Is this safe? he can roll in both directions.

I have 5 month old boy/girl twins and while my dd is happy to sleep on her back, ds hates it!
I ended up going against advice and he has slept on his front since he was 6 weeks old!
He can now roll over but only does it when he has already woken. He is a brilliant sleeper, while dd can be a nightmare!

If your lo likes to sleep on their front then let them

My hv said it was ok as long as they can lift up their heads when on their tummies.
Ds often slept on his tummy on dh when tiny with colic or in a sort of recovery position.

Well, the safety advice round here is not to. My HV said not until they can roll both ways (front to back and the reverse) on their own.

I think it's a question of balancing risk and benefit. Cot deaths have dropped by something like 70% since 'back to sleep' was introduced. It's a tiny, tiny, tiny risk. But obviously a very serious issue. Only you can really make that call.

Thanks everyone. Interesting to see the conflicting advice from hvs! Marginal improvement last night so I think I'll wait it out and see if it gets better first - I did try putting dd on her tummy when she was in bed with me in the early hours this mornign (I was awake) and she kept trying to bury her nose in the mattress so maybe not such a good idea for her...

Veyso, I'm pretty sure that if they can roll over themselves it's fine. Otherwise you woudl have to get up every 10mins through the night to check they were still on their back!
