What shall I, can I do?? Should I transfer him to a big bed, as he is no longer successfully contained... seems a little premature to me? Any advice and/or views welcome.

Our ds moved into a big bed (high captain's bed with rail) around 20 months and he was totally happy. We had actually bought the bed for sds but ds took a shine to it and sds was happy to share with him (only at ours on weekends) and I was pregnant with dd, so it solved issue of how to get ds out of cot before dd arrived. Though I do have to say that ds was climbing ladders before he could walk.

Both my DC's were moved into bed at 18 months, primarily due to their ability to climb out and I was concerned they would hurt themselves.

For a while I kept a stair gate on their bedroom doors so that if they did wake in the night they would have to call out rather than try and negotiate additional stairs on their own.

Our ds was climbing out of his cot at around 15 months so we moved him to a bed with a rail to stop him rolling out and a stair gate across his bedroom door. It worked; he seemed to sleep better and generally seemed happier. Having the stair gate across his door also meant he got up and played in his room in the morning without disturbing us, so that was a bit of a bonus!

Our youngest did just this and so we had to change his cot into a bed as he had worked out how to unzip his grobag and climb out of his cot. He wasn't so bad at staying in his bed as our eldest (maybe something to do with sharing a bedroom and copying the "routine"). But we bought him one of these comfy toddler duvets and he has always been as happy as larry since.

Our eldest wasn't quite so easy. We put him into a full size single bed with a bed guard and he would just get out of bed and walk around the house. It was a nightmare. We had to put a stair-gate across his door. I remember reading up on it (as was at wits end) and the book said we had to tie a piece of rope to the door, or something so that he could see out but actually couldn't get out. But that didn't work - the stair-gate option a lot better! You have to literally just keep taking them and putting them back in bed. It was totally exhausting - but like all things - they do finally get it.
