Feet to foot when they bend their legs

We're going to try and have week old DS sleep in his Moses basket tonight, after a week of me sitting up all night with him so he can sleep and next to me.

One thing I don't quite get with the feet to foot business is whether it should be judged with legs extended or with legs bent. DS mainly sleeps with his legs bent up in a frog pose, but if put those to the foot of the bed, he won't be able to straighten his legs should he want to. But if we place him so that straightened legs would meet the foot of the basket, surely then he would have the space to get under the blanket should he have his legs bent up. Can someone please advise me?

gosh you are tired poor thing. there are a few possibilities but probably putting as if feet can just not touchthe end at full stretch would cover all.

but it may be that he will scream as soon as touches cot and you will die of disappointment.

I would put him feet to foot with legs bent but then scootch him up a little to give straightening room. It's really unlikely at a week old that he could wriggle enough to get under the blanket if tucked in anyway.

Alternatively if you can get hold of a sleeping bag then that gets rid of the issue.

Or lay down next to him and go to sleep yourself (following safe co-sleeping rules which I can link to if you're not aware of them).

Congrats on your baby btw

I'm cautiously optimistic about tonight, as he's had two sleeps in his new basket already today, but one was swaddled so he couldn't escape, and the other DP watched him, so the feet thing wasn't an issue. I am steeled for disappointment though...

Okay, we'll go for space for almost straight, but not quite. I can't believe how nerve wracking this is. I'm feeling cautious about this whole sleep thing as we wrapped him too warmly earlier, and when we got him up from his nap his babygro had what seemed to be a huge wet sweat patch on his back (although his nappy then was his heaviest yet, but I am not sure whether it could have leaked). Feeling like a bad mummy. Very upsetting.

Aw... is he your first? It is nerve-wracking to start but you sound like you're doing really well.

Oh, and he doesn't seem to want to co-sleep with me. I thought all babies loved that, but he's not interested. We have slept for two day time naps on the living room carpet together though (seemed logical at the time).

He is the first. We've learned a lot this week, but it's still all so daunting. And thank you; I'll keep trying.
