Will not sleep in bed after putting away cot

Hi there,

Our 2 and half year old toddler is a happy chap.

We have in the last 2 weeks put away his cot and put a small single bed in his room. We involved him whilst making these changes and made it a big deal.

He has his favorite postman pat duvet and his toys close by. We read stories and have milk at bed time after a bath so he is relaxed. He climbs into bed all happy but doesn't want to sleep in the bed. He says ' sleep next to me'.

He used to love his cot but hates settling to sleep in the bed.

He climbs out of the bed several times and calls us.
He makes every excuse possible and usually weeps himself to sleep which is stressful.

During the night around 2pm he finds his way to our bedroom and jumps into our bed.

Everyday he says ' not sleeping in my bed, sleeping in Mummy's bed'.

Do you think we have put the cot away too early or is this a normal pattern.

I put my ds in a bed just before he was 2 as he was able to climb out of his cot.He has a safety gate at his door and the first night he hated it and finally fell asleep on the floor, the 2nd night he (after he calmed down) did go to sleep in his bed, now he goes in his bed no problem and doesnt get out til morning. I'd recommend putting a gate up at his door so he cant get into mummy and daddys bed, unless ur happy with that. You will prob get a few disturbed nights but he'll soon get the hang on it.Good luck!

sounds fairly normal to me - two of my three did just the same.
Actually, a just 4yo dd has just invaded climbed in beside me.

do you think we should persevere? i was thinking of putting the cot back in. He's currently standing in the hall way crying... maybe putting a gate up will solve the problem. I haven't got a problem with him crying i can live with that it's when he starts walking around in the middle of the night.

i'd try the gate first, uve already took the first step i'd preserve with it if i was you, it'll be worth it in the end.

thanks for your advice, it's been really helpful, time to buy a bed rail and put the gate up! (fhmm)
