2 1/2 in a bunk bed?

We're struggling to find room in our small house following the arrival of twins in April. I'm considering putting our 2.5 year old in a bunk bed to free up a bed for my mum who is going to look after them when I go back to work.

He's been in a big bed since he was 18 months old and hasn't had any problems only that he sometimes gets up in the night having lost his dummy. He's very agile and I've no concerns that he'll be fine getting in and out of the top bunk but I'm wondering how he'll be in the night, half asleep climbing down the ladder.

Has anyone else got any experience of this, I'd be grateful for your thoughts/advice

No experience, but personally I would wait until he was a little older

i don't think i would do it myself. it's a long way to fall if he slipped, or was messing about on the bed or anything.

why does your mum need a bed? could you get one of those trundle bed type things? or a sofa bed?

I wouldn't do it.

DS3 has been on the bottom bunk since he went into a bed at the start of this year (about 22 months). He's been able to climb up (not down so well as it's a vertical ladder not on a slant) since then. Yes he sometimes climbs up and messes around (not so much now though) -but at 2 1/2yrs old I wouldn't consider actually putting him in the top bunk to sleep even though he has free access to the top bunk every night once I've come downstairs/gone to sleep.

No, I wouldn't do it. I need bunks for my DS's (just turned 5 and 2) and I'm getting ones that can be split into two beds - once my youngest is older they'll get built into bunks. The room will be crowded with it as two separate beds but I just couldn't take the risk with my 2 year old.

Thanks for the advice, especially from those with bunks and toddlers. It's all about looking at options and you're right that this isn't a viable one yet.

LOL I thought you meant two and a half children in a bunk bed and was interested to know how you defined half a child!

My two (5.5 and 2.5) get dead excited about any special sleeping arrangements! A mattress on the floor comes into this category - would that be an option for you, or are you too short of floor space?
