Is there any way of stopping 15 mo crawling into cot bars and waking up screaming?!

I posted in the development section last week about my DS (15 months) who has suddenly started waking up screaming in the night at least 50% of the time and takes up to 1.5 hours to settle. It isn't his teeth or ears and he is otherwise in fine fettle and nice and warm and so it seems to be related to the fact that he has made big developments in walking and talking in the last 3-4 weeks. I've realised that when I go in to him, I usually find him crumpled up head-first against the bars at the top of his cot flailing about and I'm wondering if this is why he's waking up - that he's practising his new moves or acting out dreams.

I wondered if anyone has any tips to prevent this or if I just have to wait it out? I obviously can't put bumpers or anything else in the cot or he will instantly escape!

why would bumpers help him escape?
in time i think he will get used to the bars being there. there is not much you can do if you are not going ot put bumpers on unless someone comes up wiht a better solution
my 2 year old sleeps in a cot (long story his bed is at my exes house) and does not use the bumpers as a step to get out!

my ds constantly escaped by using the bumper as a step. he would use his toes to grip the ties and clamber over the edge!

i have seen these bumpers that can be velcroed around individual bars but i can't remember what they are called.

i will try searching for you.

my two year old must just be a lazy little buggar then!

Thanks bamboobutton, that would be great. My DS is a climber so would definitely use them as a step - he's already trying to swing his legs up to the top bar!

Just to be clear, he has been in the cot since he was 5 mo, this is a new thing since all the development happened (and it may be me clutching at straws as I try to work out why he is waking up!)
