my ds slept on his front from very early on - in the first month when we figured it out!

But as your post says, if he's more comfortable on his back, then I'd keep him that way...

We did the crying thing but going in and shhhing and letting him know we're there at intervals. We did it at 9 months, though... so it took a bit longer.

Sorry i meant turned him onto his front and he went off straight away.
I usually put him down on back but this leads to him not settlin and waking lots..

It's pretty much fine after they can roll - otherwise you'd have to keep going in to roll them back if they rolled onto their front. So keep on putting him on his front - my DS always slept much better that way.

I think that it's lots safer after they turn six months and can roll easily from front to back and back again. I don't know what the recommended age is though.

We were lucky, DS hated being on his front until he learned to crawl, and only started sleeping on it after he was one.

ds has been on his front from early on too.
i soon learned that on his back he would wake every 10-20 minutes and scream, whereas on his front he'd have a good 2 hour nap!

My DD slept on her front from the get go. it was the only way she would sleep

Seona1973 · 07/12/2009 22:19

from 6 months you can let them find their own sleeping postion. My lo's favoured the bum in the air with legs tucked under them - very cute!

wellbalanced · 07/12/2009 22:56

Thanks for your replies-He's been asleep solid since 7.30, Normally we would of had 2 wake ups by now! And i went in and accidently woke him he just moved round abit and went back off!!!

But am i going to be able to sleep!!!!!!

sleeping on front is fantastic, once they're past the dodgy age, because they are wedged so can't wake themselves by startling.

at 7.5 months they can roll over anyway if they want to, can't they? So I wouldn't worry any more

elk4baby · 08/12/2009 15:48

Mine has been sleeping exclusively on his front since 4.5 months. I tried turning him onto his back at first, but that wasn't well received, so it was easier to just leave him be. The first night I left him alone, he slept better than ever! I figured, since he was able to put himself in that position, he must be ready for it.

SydneyB · 08/12/2009 15:53

DS slept on his front from the get go. Always had great head control and was only way he'd go to sleep when he was tiny..

Worrier28 · 11/12/2009 15:48

My baby also slept on his front since birth, he would scream and scream when placed on his back.

minnietheminx007 · 11/12/2009 16:40

i have been wondering if letting my dd sleep on her front (6.5 months) would help her to sleep better but how on earth do you manage to get them into that position when you put them down? Dd is currently being put down asleep not awake as all these books like to tell me!

IslandIsla · 13/12/2009 10:50

DD has slept on her front since she was 4.5 months, when she started rolling. At first I would put her on her back and she'd roll over. Now she is 8.5 months, and she still usually goes down asleep or at least very sleepy from her BF (no, not ideal, but works for us. She will go down awake, but takes a while bouncing around her cot and grizzling. Feeding to sleep is currently more convenient!) I put her down sort of on her side and she immediately rolls to her front (and stays sleeping) so that is how I get her into that position! Sometimes she also sleeps curled up on her side - so cute!

liamsdaddy · 14/12/2009 13:32

DS started on his front around 6 months. I suspect it would of been a couple of months earlier, but we had him in a baby sleep bag which inhibited rolling a bit.

By 6 mo he could roll over regardless of the sleep bag. At 8 months he can pull himself to standing in the bag as well - Eeek.

We were uncomfortable with sleeping on his front due to all the material about the risk of SIDS, but at 6 months+ the risk starts to decrease (it's never 0% risk).

We also had him on a GoiGoi pillow due to some deformational plagiocephaly (flathead). So had to take that away at the same time.

He doesn't always sleep on his front these days, often he switches to his side.

My dd2,screamed the house day from day 1,when we put her down on her back to sleep, after a few days we finally figured it out & she slept 'like a baby' on her front & she was fine!!

forevermore · 16/12/2009 18:25

DD2 is 16 weeks and always slept on front daytime. I am not confident to allow it overnight though even though I know she would sleep longer if I was
