Baby has started waking again after sleeping through

Hi everyone, I've just signed up as a new member and hope someone can give me some much needed advice! My baby is almost 10 months old and was sleeping through from about 8pm until 6-7am until just over 2 weeks ago. He's now started waking after only a few hours, and having checked the obvious eg he's not too hot/cold, tried giving him a drink of water, but he will not go back to sleep until he has his dummy. He'll then wake up a couple of hours later when he loses his dummy, and I'm up and down at least 3 times a night re-inserting his dummy. He goes to sleep fine without his dummy initially and has gone months without waking up until now. I can't see that he's hungry as he eats plenty during the day, and he does go straight back to sleep with his dummy.

I left him to cry for a few minutes to see if he would go back to sleep but he wouldn't. I've got a 4 year old in the next room in her 1st year of school so I'm reluctant to allow him to continue to cry as I don't want her tired for school. And just to make matters worse, I returned to work (luckily only part-time!) this week so the problem couldn't have arisen at a worse time!

Has anyone got any ideas of what may be causing a previously good sleeper to suddenly wake?

teething?

sorry, that was a bit abrupt. I should have said hello and welcome to mumsnet

Thanks! I don't think it is teething, he has 4 teeth so far and they haven't bothered him too much, with each one we had a few sniffles but that was about it. I'm almost at the stage of keeping my eyes open with matchsticks!

Hi, there. Sorry to say this, but "sleeping through" is not a Promised Land from which there is no return. My DS (19mths) has "slept through" for periods, but is currently in a cycle of waking up at night and crying instead of settling himself. Unfortunately, I don't have the presence of mind to try not to feed him, so this noisy waking will probably persist for a bit, getting later and later, until he sleeps till morning again, or at least settles himself if he wakes at night.

Teething is a sensible idea, but also what about a growth spurt? Our latest wakefulness was initially accompanied by feeding frenzy: one night he drank a whole 7oz bottle then cried for more until I had made another, than drank that in one go (total 14oz!), and only then fell asleep.

Even if "sleeping through" comes and goes, so does waking up at night. Don't be too depressed!

If only I could ask him! I know it could in theory be absolutely anything.

Once my daughter started sleeping through, that was pretty much it apart from the occasional one-off, although she did require a lot more effort actually getting to sleep. My son, on the other hand, goes to sleep by himself straight away, so I thought I had the 'perfect baby'! I guess you can't have everything!

Is it just a case of riding the storm and get through on sleep-deprived auto-pilot until he's a teenager and won't get out of bed lol!
