11weeks and still feeding every 3 hours through the night

W is 11 weeks old and still does not sleep for more than 3 hours at a time at night. Is this normal and can I do anything to persuade him to sleep for longer? Even when he cluster feeds in the evening, he doesn't lengthen his sleep pattern. I've just ordered the Baby Whisperer from Amazon - does anyone know whether it really works?

Nope DD did this for 20 weeks, DS so much longer i won't scare you!

NancyBotwin · 23/11/2009 16:42

Sorry if no-one told you before but this is pretty normal. I also won't scare you by telling you how old ds2 was before he slept through. (lets just say we weren't counting it in months, let alone weeks!)

CMOTdibbler · 23/11/2009 16:46

Sounds normal to me too

MadredeGuillermo · 23/11/2009 16:49

Relief to know that this seems to be normal. Went to a mums and babies group this morning and all other babies both same age and older are apparently sleeping for longer stretches. He doesn't seem to have changed his pattern since he was about 4 weeks old but I guess he's just a creature of habit!

IME, mums at baby groups can tend to exaggerate things like how long their LO sleeps at night...

Sounds normal to me. You might stretch it to 4 hours (so 1 night feed) soon if you can get a bit more down during the day but then I was stuck on 1 nightly feed until about 9 months, when we eventually decided enough was enough and pushed her through by giving her nothing but water in the night.

MummyTumble · 23/11/2009 16:54

Take what they say with a pinch of salt....I've had friends saying their kids sleep through really early onand all they have to do is keep popping thier dummy back in

posieparker · 23/11/2009 16:56

My first two slept through at 10 weeks, bf only, .

So I had two more babies because I was obviously a gifted mother.

dc3 slept through at 15 months and dc4 is still waking twice a night at 12 months....

Seems like it wasn't me afterall.

I agree that people embroider the truth about night waking. Friends told us that cc had worked wonders with their dd, and that we had to do it . When staying with them, their DD was always up crying a couple of times, wheras DS would wake, feed, and sleep while I dozed. When he decided to sleep through (of his own accord, but you don't want to know when) that was it - he v v v rarely wakes, even for illness, extreme weather and fireworks

tvaerialmagpiebin · 23/11/2009 19:54

Sorry, OP, this is normal (and not bad going). My ds was awake about every 90 minutes until he was about 4 months old. Then he very kindly went to every 2 hours. Oh I felt blessed.
Repeat ad nauseam, "This too shall pass"

DS was spot on average - woke twice a night til he was 3 months then once a night til the dreaded 4month no sleep phase, which went on for a month, he was then on one night waking until he was about a month into eating solids, at 7 months

MrsBadger · 30/11/2009 11:30

oh and do lie to the babygroup mums if it makes you feel better

phdlife · 30/11/2009 11:34

I remember when ds was 9m, having a freakout about him missing a feed and dsis saying, "god, you don't have to keep feeding him ever 3 hrs like a little baby", and me saying, "are you kidding? he's only just gone to 3-hrly feeds!"

treedelivery · 30/11/2009 11:39

I am really sorry to say this, but dd2 feeds 2-3 hourly at 10 months!!! Even after changing to formula at 9 months as I had to stop for medication. And she only sleeps inour arms during the bits in between. Swap ya??

It is hard - get your sleep where you can. Afternoon naps are a great thing.
