Ok Ladies, please reassure me I am not the only mum of a one-year-old (just) who cries long and loudly EVERY single night before he goes to sleep, and then wakens at least once or twice a night.I fear dh and I may have created a rod for our own back by taking him into bed with us when we can bear the wee small hours crying no longer. I keep thinking it will sort itself out,and suddenly we are at a year and it hasn't!! Have tried the controlled crying thing with no success, I hated it, so perhaps should have persevered. My ds is the most contented, happy boy during the day. Help!

not at all, ds2 fed to sleep until he was around 11 months, and he has only recently started sleeping through (he is 2)

if he will fall asleep with you there then stay with him. IMO it's better to go with what works than to try and force them to change. he's crying because he needs you there

Reassuring to hear that...it seems like all the mums I know with babies the same age have had them sleeping thru the night for months. I was wondering if I was doing something wron or was being too 'soft' for not being able to stick with the controlled crying

DS is just starting to have a few nights sleeping through and he is 17 months.
He still bf to sleep most nights but will sometimes go into his cot sleepy but awake and settle himself, usually by singing in his hilarious gurgly way

I am also too 'soft' for CC and have resisted 'training' him as has been suggested by many well meaning friends and relatives.

I have clung onto the belief that they all eventually settle into a pattern of getting themselves to sleep and sleeping through the night when they are ready and that it is different for every child.

It does mean he hasn't slept over with grandparents yet, much to their disappointment, but there'll be plenty of time for that in due course.

So I would say don't worry about rods and backs etc and do whatever you find easiest

14 month old DD has just done the same here, I don't want to do the CC, BF to sleep doesn't work at the beginning of the night (but does in the middle thank god). I asked my Mum tonight if she had any suggestions - she said with a grin that DD is just like I was.
