How to end co-sleeping

DD is now 10 months and has slept in our bed since birth. We have a cot and would like to move her into it but have no idea how! She still feeds to sleep and when I put her in the cot awake or even sleepy she yells and yells. Any ideas?

Can you start with daytime naps in the cot? These are often less stressful and can help her to get used to the new environment. If she won't nap yet either, start by making the cot somewhere you play and spend time together. She needs to get used to it as being her space and somewhere that is good to be. Take things slowly. If you can put her into the cot asleep so that she wakes up in it that will also help. Also, you could try putting her in it with an item of clothing or bedding that smells of you so that the smell is the same as your bed.

I'm in the same boat as you. My son will soon be 8 months old and only wants to sleep with us. I'm relieved to hear that there is someone else out there with a similar problem. Even now, I just put him down for his nap in our bed, and not the cot (which is next to our bed). I guess I need to break our bad habits first!

good luck!

thanks for the messages. She won't go in her cot awake at nap time either but I have managed to get her into the cot asleep a few times and she seems ok with that when she wakes up. I suppose slowly is the best way. To momfrombrooklyn though, I'd recommend you start trying soon, everything's a lot more pressured now she's crawling - I just can't leave her in the bed during day or night so I have to go to bed with her whenever she needs to sleep!
