HELP!!! DS CONSTANT WAKING AT NIGHT WEARING US DOWN...

MrsBigD · 05/05/2005 08:23

I know there have been quite a few posts along those lines but I'm too stupid and/or tired to find them . Not sure what I'm expecting in replies, probably just the reassurance that I'm not on my own feeling completely useless

On top of having started to wake up properly at 05:00 (which seems to be an age thing going by what I've read on mn - he's 8 months old) ds now keeps waking up at night nearly on an hourly basis crying/winging.

I think it's a combination of

  1. moving up in bed and banging his head,

  2. probably teething

  3. last couple of nights he was hungrier than ususal,

  4. possibly wind and

  5. just plain... I want a cuddle...

  6. Tried him in a sleeping bag but he get's really cranky so no gain there

  7. tried calgel and calpol but no change either

  8. made sure he has a big dinner and thickened milk at 8pm

  9. always wind him and his burps do his father proud

  10. not picking him up now just putting him back down and covering him up and quickly patting his bum (seems to calm him down)

Can't really do controlled crying because it wakes dd (3.3) and she then will come in and tell me that ds is crying... and then she's shattered and cranky in the morning when she's going to nursery. Probably should still try, and it might work after a week, but a tired and grumpy dd is a mix of screaming banshee & godzilla's destructive gene!

HELP

im interested to hear what people think as im sure dd is luring me into a false sense of security as she sleeps from 12ish to 7.30 but is less than 2 weeks old. just waiting for her to wake up all the time screaming.

MrsBigD · 05/05/2005 08:32

starshaker... ds used to be a good sleeper, besides being a grunter that is, but it all started going all horribly wrong about Easter time... not wanting to scare you though

We're just soooooooooooo tired and need to do something. Otherwise it's going to be ... one of us sleeps in the living room with him and we alternate nights... not ideal that though

yeah i can see her doing that she has me round her wee finger already. i made a rule that she would not be picked up every time she winges but its me that does it cos i dont like her being upset lol

starlover · 05/05/2005 08:47

starshaker... you CANNOT spoil a newborn baby!
Your dd isn't wrapping you round her finger, she's letting you know that she needs a cuddle.
Make the most of being able to pamper her now and have as many cuddles as you can, as they grow so quickly!

starshaker · 05/05/2005 08:52

she might not have me there yet but i know when she wants to wrap me round i will be there so tight i might snap lol. shes just soo amazing cant believe we made something so perfect

starlover · 05/05/2005 08:53

i know that feeling!

hermykne · 05/05/2005 08:58

mrsbigd
i had this too with ds 9mths now, and he was constipated, if he is eating consistently and correctly thru out the day do you need to thicken his milk at night, rem he has alot of baby intestine and he could be clogged up, my ds was, gave him prunes for a few days at breakfast and result explosions galore, but wow he is now so content and sleeping from 7.30 til 5.30 , slight stir and back til 7.

you know yourself how u feel if you have eaten too much and it aint coming out

ghosty · 05/05/2005 09:04

I was thinking that too MrsBigD ... perhaps he has a tummy ache ... ???

MrsBigD · 05/05/2005 09:13

trust me... he's not constipated ... it's amazing how much poop he produces! Also he gets fennel tea throughout the day to avoid 'clogging'

I only thickened the milk in the evening to see whether it makes a difference to his sleep as he wanted milk twice the few nights before so I thought that might fill him up for longer... well it didn't work.

I forgot to mention that I've not cut normal bread and stuff like that from his diet to see whether he's got a gluten intolerance. It's been 2 days but no change yet. Here's assuming that rice doesn't contain gluten?

Why are you cutting out bread/gluten?

MrsBigD · 05/05/2005 09:37

just seeing whether he's got an intolerance that causes wind/the runs. That's the easiest to exclude for by myself iykwim

I'm allergic to rye, barley & oats I have to add
