breastfeeding to sleep

my 9 wk old dd needs to suck to get to sleep - as she can't get her thumb consistently and won't take a dummy, that means sucking on me. At night that's manageable, but not in the afternoon, in the street (as happened last week).

I've been trying to pull away earlier and earlier as she goes to sleep, but I don't feel we're making much progress.

I really don't want to be in the same situation in a few months time, any tips / thoughts appreciated

It wears off, honestly. That's all I can say. I had a very sucky baby who didn't like her thumb or dummies but she got there in the end. Will she fall asleep in a sling or in a pram? Nine weeks is still very little. I bet in a few weeks you'll be able to take her out without worrying so much.

DS was a bit like this, now 17 weeks and will suck his hand or muslin square in the car/buggy. Still needs boob in his mouth to go to sleep at night though, HO-hum!

thanks, it's good to hear that it wears off (at least during the day!). Yes, she'll go to sleep in pram and sling usually (apart from last week). It's good to get it in perspective, 9 wks seems old to me!

Last week she was most likely going through a growth spurt and still hungry. At this age, it's hard to stop them falling asleep at the breast.

ds found his fingers at 10 weeks and never looked back, so you may be close to that now too.
