night time nappy changes?

Hi

My dd is 4 weeks old, she hates going to sleep and fights against it, both day and night. I have finally worked out that she will go back into her moses basket after very quiet night time feeds, but ONLY if she doesn't have her nappy changed (which she hates any time of day anyway!). However, my DH thinks we need to change her nappy after her 3/4am feed as she will have had an 8pm and 11/12am feed by then. If we do change her nappy (or at the earlier feed) not only will she not go back into her moses basket, she won't go back to sleep anywhere, nor in the morning until about nowish (she has just gone down, but has been up since 3am).

How wet can I leave her? If she does a poo I have to change her dont I? This is getting me quite stressed as DH is back at work and leaves home at 7am, returning at about 7pm and so whilst he does try and help in the nights it stresses me more knowing he is off to a very tough job and inevitably I either send him to sleep or lie awake wanting to take DD off him so he can sleep.

Any nappy advice (or any other advice ) very much appreciated!

I always avoided nappy changes at night - unless clearly wet or pooey. There's no point doing it just because you feel you should. If you must, use very dim lighting, be as quick as possible and no chat.

Go get some sleep yourself now!

I only change dirty nappies not wet ones.

My DS is 12 weeks old, and since about 4-5 weeks, I do last change at 10pm ish when he has a dream feed then that's it till morning (he still has one feed during the night). His nappy is VERY full in the morning, but if you use barrier cream, you shouldn't have any problems. With the routine you've described, I would change at 11pm and then leave her till morning. HTH

Also if you need to change her, do it before the feed, or in the middle.

I would never change a wet nappy in the night - only if it's pooey. As LMN said try to continue the feed after the nappy change to get your DD back into sleepy mode (not always easy I know - all my DCs insisted on doing a huge explosive poo at EVERY feed as soon as they had finished feeding and I was about to lay them sleepily back into the moses basket, so that and the subsequent nappy change would wake them up again - v annoying).

I used to change my DS mid feed when he paused for a break, that way if he got upset I could calm him down with the rest of a feed.

Thank you everyone - going to try changing at her 11pm feed and keeping everything crossed that she doesnt have a dirty nappy in the night. Once she went to sleep this morning she slept on and off all day (through exhaustion I think!) so wonder if that will also effect her tonight.

Will let you know how it goes!
