Ds 4 and a half weeks just not settling at night on his back. He seems so much happier on his tummy and I know all the advice is against this so we end up taking it in turns to have him sleep on our chest face down. Don't know what to do for the best. We're not getting proper sleep like this. A friend of mine let her baby sleep on his tummy from 4 weeks..

The reason it's recommended not to put babies to seep on their tummies is because it is more comfortable for them, they go into a deeper sleep for longer which puts them at more risk for SIDS.

Have you considered co-sleeping? There are many threads about on here with some great advice. I currently co sleep with DD after reading about it on here and it's worked a treat for us.

Congratulations on your DS?

Have you tried swaddling? Really helped with our DS. Personally I would not put a baby down on their tummy because of the SIDS risk, but it is, at the end of the day, your call.

When I had my first family 25 years ago the advise was to place babies on their tummy's to sleep and they sold special mattresses to aid with air circulation.

Obviously when my DD was born two years ago the advise had completely changed and although at the beginning I followed it absolutely, after eight weeks of no sleep I put her on her side.

By six months she was flipping herself on to her tummy in the night.

i did the sleep on the chest thing for along time it was the only way he would sleep but then someone told me when he was on my chest to just slowly roll onto my side so eventually he was on his back and i was in the c shape co-sleeping position. Worked great for me.
For along time though his daytime naps were on me (never got anything done) but now he is fine both day and night.
I wouldn't risk putting him on his tummy as it does increase the risk and you wouldn't relax yourself knowing that

Mine slept on his side - he wouldn't sleep on his back. I coslept.

Now he still sleeps mainly on his side or his tummy
