9 month old - used to sleep, now doesn't.....

Well that's not strictly true....he does sleep, but it's all changed and I'm sure there is simple thing I could do to change it but don't know what!
I'll put you in the picture...
He slept really well once I got him in a routine at about 8 weeks (3 naps a day, bed at 7pm, woke twice for a feed, up at 7am - sorry sorry sorry sounds awful to those of you who are up every two hours!), then we gradually dropped the feeds and he was sleeping like a textbook baby. I suppose we took that for granted because for the last couple of months his sleep has been gradually getting worse. He won't nap for longer than half an hour in the day, which he only does twice, then he goes down about 7-8pm, sleeps like a dream til about midnight, then is awake on and off til the morning, when he wakes up grizzly. When I say on and off - he sort of moans, and you go in and his eyes are shut but he's semi awake. Probably wrong, but I put his dummy in, he nods off, I go back to bed and then he's awake again doing the same thing about half an hour later.
The other thing I should add is that he used to settle himself in the cot, playing with his toys. But now that he can roll over and crawl, the minute I put him in the cot, he rolls on his front and is up on his hands and knees - even if he's been awake for hours. he won't settle on his back so I always give in and take him into our bed, cuddle him and stroke his head and he's out like a light. I know I need to get him to settle himself, but how? And how long will it take? If I just leave him he will stay on his hands and knees and then cry for me when he gets his foot trapped or falls and bangs his head.
I know what I am doing at moment is not right and it is doing my head in which is why I am posting on here!

sounds like the dummy is the problem

Milsy · 21/04/2009 22:42

Do you think the dummy is the problem? If so, you could try getting rid of it and seeing if that makes a difference? We do have a sleepytot baby comforter which might help with the dummy thing.

Why don't you try leaving him to settle by himself however he is comfortable and see what happens before you intervene. Maybe he will just practice his newfound skills and then go off to sleep ...x

My 10 month old used to nap for England but now her daytime sleep has reduced to 1 hour or 1.5 hours. She sleeps well at night - when I settle her at 7pm in her cot she often rolls onto her tummy but I still leave her as she is and often she sleeps on her stomach or eventually rolls back onto her back. She moans and babbles in the night too (not every night) but I never go in unless she's really crying (rare) so she settles back to sleep (often she is moaning in her sleep anyway). She doesn't have a dummy.

I would say, leave her be unless she is in distress.

I forgot to add that she suddenly reduced her napping (from 3 naps to 2 and now she's moving to 1 nap; and from 2.5 hours a day to around 1 hour a day) as soon as she hit 9 months. She is fine though and she still sleeps through so we are not worried. So it could be your LO is needing less daytime sleep naturally.

Thanks all, good advice and will take it all on board - not sure if dummy is the problem - he has always had it and used to sleep fine before. He only really sucks it to get off to sleep then spits it out.
He slept really well the other night actually, only waking once for a few minutes then back off to sleep til 6.30am, but I didn't do anything any different. he just went in his cot, stayed on his back and went to sleep all night!
His first tooth has just come in though, so maybe that? Last night was a nightmare again, but there's been lots of gnawing on objects today so maybe it's more teeth?
He has got two sort of blankie toys that he sleeps with so might try and lose the dummy and see, but might just leave him to moan for a bit!
