Expecting Baby No 2 in 5 months. Advisable to move 22 month into bed now, or after bro/sis arrives?

My 22 month old daughter sleeps well, often 12 hours straight through. She gave up grobags at about 12 monthts, sleeps with blankets and a light duvet and sleepsuit on.

No. 2 is due in 5 months, and I'm going to potty train No 1 this summer as she's showing signs of being ready, but I'm also thinking about moving her into a bed.

Otherwise, I'm concerned that when her brother/sister comes to join her in the nursery in her cot once baby no 1 has outgrown her moses basket, it will also be on top of transitioning into a bed.

She doesn't try to get out, but she is happy to stay in her bed for ages, often over an hour, when she's awake just lying there talking to herself. Don't want to make life hard for myself now, but in the long run is it a good idea to transition into a bed now to save grief later? She loves coming into our bed once she's woken in the morning for cuddles...

I would do it now, but my two were in beds by 18mths.

Get it over and done with before you have 2 to worry about!

Thanks, HaventSleptForAYear (great name, btw!)

Thank you.

It's more like 2 now!

DS2 was a refluxer and a v. bad sleeper.

Good luck with the bed thing - the first couple of nights you might need to camp out on the stairs with a magazine (top tip from s/o on here) and keep doing rapid return, no fuss, no discussion.

It should all be over in a couple of nights.

If you're going to do the potty-training too then it's good if they can come down and ask if they need a wee - my two were in pants immediately for afternoon sleeps because they could get up when they wanted.

Pop her in now - I put my DD in a big bed aged 18 months had her wee bro 3 months later. First 2 nights were a bit up and down bu then she was fine - I did put it against 1 wall with a side panel on the other side.

My ds1 was about the same age when we moved him into a bed for exactly the same reason and it was def the right time. we had a few teething problems when he first went into a bed( not settling aswell) and these were much easier to deal with without a baby intow, it also meant he was fully settled in his bed when ds2 arrived. We let him chose the bedding etc and had fun turning into a 'big boys room'. When ds2 did arrive we had no trouble with ' but thats my cot' type behaviour, so I would definitely make the move now.

Thanks for all the advice. We're going on a 2 week holiday to crazy outer isles of Scotland in May so I'm wondering if I should leave it until June as I'm not sure how sleeping in lots of different beds will be when she's first getting used to the one at home.

Or perhaps we can continue to use travel cot? But that might be confusing to her? I think I'd feel a bit afronted if I was in a big girl's bed and then went back into a cot for 2 weeks... Any ideas?

My dd was 21 months when ds turned up. I moved her into her big bed abput 6 weeks before. I put her new bed in with her cot (v cosy) and let her choose to begin wit and then took cot out - no issues, no probs and a cot for the new one! {grin}
Worked for us!!

HaventSleptForAYear · 03/04/2009 20:26

We continued using the travel cot when away - didn't seem to bother mine.

Jools78 · 03/04/2009 20:46

Thanks, Joycey29. Think I will def. transition before the new one arrives.

HaventSleptForAYear, ours is a big travel cot, too, so maybe we'll get away with it.

Rumpel, sounds like first 2 days are a bit dodgy is par for the course...
