Newborn wants to sleep on her front...

What do I do? She will sleep in her bouncy chair and her pram but at night will not settle in her moses basket. So far I have ended up sleeping with her on my chest but that is exhausting for me as I don't sleep well.
This morning, I put her in the basket on her tummy and she slept like a dream (I was awake having a cup of tea next to her).
Has anyone here put their baby on their front?

Have you tried letting your DD fall asleep on your chest then placing her on her back next to you in bed? That is working with my DD (2 weeks old) - she self settles like a miracle in the daytime, but is more awake generally at night and struggles with it all. I have her sleeping next to me, outside the duvet, wearing a baby sleeping bag.

I think everyone I know from my antenatal group when I had DS ended up with their baby sleeping on its tummy at least once in a while.

And everyone worried themselves sick over it.

FWIW, part of the basis of the SIDS advice is thought to be that babies do sleep more soundly on thier tummies, but that this means they don't rouse themselves if they have a 'stop breathing' episode.

Thanks Captain! I have been doing what you suggested but last night she woke every time I put her next to me. I might try putting her into her big cot rather than the moses basket. My other two always went down so easily, maybe I'm expecting too much!

my friend had 2 babies that wouldn't sleep on their backs but would sleep on their tummies.

she fought it until the 6 week check and her GP said perhaps for some babies it is the front or nothing.

Hux · 26/03/2009 21:15

Had exactly the same problem which I fought for 4 weeks and then a friend lent me a breathing monitor thing and she has slept on her front ever since.

My LO's never likes the moses basket. Try putting her in the cot but at 90 degrees to the normal way so she doesn't feel too lost in the big bed.

dd2 would not sleep on her back right from birth (dd1 no problem...).

I tried everything - swaddling/not swaddling, moses basket/cot/co-sleeping, sleeping bag/sheet & blankets with no joy. She would only sleep on her tummy or on me!

After 3 sleepless weeks I gave in gracefully and she has tummy slept ever since.

I did consider all the risk factors for sids and there are no smokers in the house, the bedroom is cool (no heating on at night) and dd2 has a sleeping bag with appropriate layers on underneath.

Thanks all

I have ordered a new mattress for the cotbed so when that arrives I might try her on her tummy. She slept quite well last night - I half swaddled (she lkes to suck her fingers) and put her on her side.

You'd think by number 3 I'd be a dab hand

Neither DS1 (nearly 2) or DS2 (4 weeks) will sleep on their back. Had several sleepless months with the PFB but with DS2 he went on his tummy within a few days and has stayed there ever since

HLaurens · 02/04/2009 21:13

DD1 was a fairly rubbish sleeper, woke up a lot and was difficult to settle. Swaddling and putting her on her side helped, but we never put her on her front.

DD2 was a better sleeper from the start, but we soon discovered, after DH put her on her front one afternoon, that she was an amazing sleeper on her front. I only did this in the day time for a while, but after a few weeks I cracked and put her on her front at night too. She immediately slept better, and slept through at 4.5mths (half the time of DD1).

So I would say go for it on the front - we have a breathing monitor which really gave me peace of mind.

I came onto this section to post the exact same thing. My health visitor told me it was fine to do it during the day if you are nearby but not at night.

He sleeps in our bed at the moment in my arm but really want him to sleep by himself - is very tempting to put him on his front.
