Early wakings - Do I have to do anything?

Hi,

I have read a few threads on early wakings... DS has just started doing this (he turns 1 next week!) and I don't really know what to do. We moved him into his own room 3 days ago but he was doing the early waking before that. His sleep is better since he's been in his own room. We used to wake him when we went to bed... Though we can hear him stir and sometimes cry out, he self-settles and we haven't had to go in to him yet at night. But once the clock goes 5 (usually about 5.10am, sometimes half past and sometimes closer to 6), he wakes properly and stands in his cot screaming hysterically. If I go get him and bring him to bed, sometimes he will lie quietly with us till wake up time but more often than not, he tries to stand using the headboard.

DH was really fed up this morning as DS got really hysterical when I didn't want to get up with him at 5.50am (he came to bed about 5.10am). He wants me to leave him in his cot and in his room to cry cos 'he has to learn'. I did bring him into his room and cuddled him to try and get him back to sleep but he was having none of it and got even more hysterical! My view is that DS just started nursery 4 days a week (a month now) and he barely sleeps there in the day, is finally getting over the separation anxiety so while he needs his sleep, I am not about to leave him to cry hysterically in his cot seeing as I am awake anyway.

What should I do? Should I try the wake-to-sleep technique or should I hope this is a phase he will grow out of? Is it a phase? Help, I'm really clueless. This has been going on about a month or two now... Thanks!

Ax

Phase, I think most likely. You can try wake-to-sleep and all that jazz but when I was in your shoes it seemed like madness to get up even earlier!

All things pass. It just takes someone else to tell you once in a while!

Thanks IAteMakkaPakka! I needed to hear that. It's not THAT bad though I work four days... As I find that it helps if I got to bed early (when I can remember to do so). It's still do-able. BTW, I saw your son's photos on another thread and he's gorgeous! Really is...

I hope he passes out the other side of it soon. Mine still does it occasionally only now he bounces on my head and shrieks too, so i do sympathise . And thanks
