how do I get my ten month old to nap for more than 2 half hour naps during the day? I 'm sure this is why he wakes during the night.

Bumping for you.

Have you tried re-settling him? Where does he sleep and how does he sleep? My DS goes through phases of being able to sleep for long periods to waking up every 30-45 minutes. Even if he protests, try and re-settle him and see how it goes. I put DS (11 months old) down late today as we went out for lunch with friends. He woke up after 45 minutes (he usually has milk at this time) and protesting really loudly. I just gave him his bottle, cuddled him and he's gone back to sleep in his cot (hopefully for another 30-45 minutes! Sometimes I end up holding a screaming baby in my arms for 10 minutes before he gives up and goes back to sleep. I think it has been said they will start sleeping more soundly (and longer!) when they get mobile i.e. walking and running as they burn more energy then and need their rest more. But what do I know? LOL, I'm a first-time mum!

Thanks angel1976 He sleeps either in his cot or in pushcahir if out and about. He seems to sleep for longer in the pushchair if we are walking but only 30 mins in his cot then cries, I try to leave him to resettle but screams. I will try going in and picking him up and resettling him. I agree when he is more mobile will maybe have longer naps. He is desperate to crawl but not quite there yet. I'm first time mum too and all my friends babies seem to all sleep for 2 hours over lunch- DS never has but just a little worried he's not sleeping enough. He is the happiest baby during the day and goes down well in the evening so I guess I should not be worried just who he is. lol and thanks

I think this statement tells me you are doing a great job! But you said he wakes during the night? Does he do this every night and does he stay awake or go back to sleep? If he stays awake, he might be overtired. If he just goes back to sleep with a cuddle, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Some babies just don't need that much sleep. My DS (11-month-old) slept really well from early on till about 7 months! Then it seems that now he does stretches... Of good sleep and bad sleep! Again, I think developmentally, there's a lot going on. Also, teething is a real bugger bother with my son. He was up and crying through the night last night cos I think he's got more teeth coming through. Ouch! I hope it gets better for you...

hockeyblue · 29/01/2009 16:33

poor you angel1976 with teething. I know how you feel. I think it could be teething. He wakes screaming in the night sometimes not always. He settles but usually only if I feed him back to sleep, bit of a habit I think. He is teething again I'm sure only has bottom 2 at mo and was a nightmare when they came through very unlike him. Thanks for your message has made me feel much better. I will wait and see what happens when he starts moving. Hope you have a better night with your little one poor thing teething such a pain for them.
