DS has always been tough to get to sleep - rarely has tired signs, goes from happy to meltdown in seconds, we regularly spend ages calming him and trying to settle him (normally takes a good hour at bedtime), he gets overtired very easily and quickly and now totally dummy addicted

recently (over the last week) he keeps waking after napping for only 20-30mins, which would be fine if it weren't for the fact he wakes screaming and angry and desperate to get back to sleep, which rarely happens...nothing else seems to be wrong, we just then have a very angry and upset baby until he decides he's hungry...any suggestions?

Could you try patting / stroking him before he is likely to wake and see if over a few naps you can get him to slip from the deep sleep cycle thru the light sleep cycle back into the next deep cycle?

Maybe having a tranquil cd playing thru naptime?

Have you tried using a light show?

Have you tried music? The only I can say is that, at 11weeks, my DS had no routine at all, and certainly no bedtime...

I think that 20-30m naps is usually a sign of over-tired (like you hadn't already worked that one out). We had fun with this too. You really just have to get him down earlier. There's no other way round it that I found. If he is going 2 hrs between naps then get him down after 1.5hrs. If you are putting him down after 1.5hrs then do it around 1.25hrs or even less. It won't always be this way. Once your LO catches up he will get easier and will eventually go longer between naps - just keep at it.

We found that once DS showed the classic tired signs it was already too late, so we just started getting him ready to go down after a certain amount of time instead. Once you sort this out he sould go down a bit easier in the evenings too

Yes - overtiredness this sounds like - my son was the same. He went down in his cot after being awake for 1.5 hours and then he'd nap well. Anything longer and he'd be awake screaming after 20 minutes. He also had a nap time routine of milk, lights off, black out blind, little lullaby, dummy, put down awake. I kept that up until he was well rested and then extended his wake times gradually - this was easier once he started napping longer.

I did the same thing as the Gabster - if he woke too early, I'd pop him in the pram. Then put him back down again after 1.5 hours being awake. At first it's hard work but within a week you'll have him sleeping better and you will start to get an idea of his sleep times and can plan your day better. x

this is really helpful, thankyou - it happens mostly in the afternoon so I think overtiredness could well be it. I have a sleepy time cd but yet to get a cd player to play it on

thanks so much for feedback...
